Hi All. I'm looking for some feedback on my DD swing. She is turning 13 and has one tournament left this summer at 12U and them moves to 14U. She had a good year this season but the majority of her hits were singles as she was hitting with all arms. So we have been working on generating more power and driving the mall. Interested to hear feedback.

Thanks in advance!

I'm guessing your DD has been taught to make sure when she finishes her swing that her rear foot toes 'point to China'.
Your DD shifts THEN swings. Meaning shifts her weight to her front side and swings. Instead of shift AND swing. Meaning the swing shifts your weight from the rear side to the middle.

Thanks for the reply. She's never had a true hitting lesson in her life, just basically a bunch rec ball coaches pointing her in different directions which hurt more than helped, so everything you see her doing is what I have taught her through what I have learned through videos and this board. Until a month a so ago her top half was leaning completely over the plate and she was just throwing her hands at the ball and hitting with no power. This led to a good first year of travel ball because she is super fast, but 90% of her hits were ground balls through the infield, and 95% were singles.

I can see what your saying about shifting her weight then swinging. Any advice or drills on how to bring to two together?

I'm not sure what you mean by her rear foot toes "point to China". I guessing that you mean pointing down in reference to digging to China.

Correct. I call it the 'look'. People see how some hitters look at finish with their rear foot and believe that is what to teach. Most miss what gets the rear foot on some hitters to finish like that. So, all the good stuff is bypassed in order to quickly get to the look. Therefore 'bleeding' all their power and left with just a 'push' arm swing. They miss all the upstream stuff that happens in the rear hip/leg area.

RDbass,

Could you break a swing down. I agree she shifts first as you can see the head moving during the swing as well. I also agree the weight should shift to center. I would like to see it broken down more to see if we are thinking the same or if I can learn from it more.

Yeah, I can break a swing down and see what a hitter is doing. Not sure I understand your question.

Believe me I can tear a swing apart but, most dads/moms don't want to hear it all. Most think there is a simple drill or a tweak to fix their DD's swing. The isn't a drill or tweak. I believe it's more of a belief in a 'system'.
My belief comes from the rear hip/rear leg (SRIP)usage. I believe the rear hip/rear leg is 'in charge' of putting the front leg down/stride. I believe the rear leg/rear hip(SRIP) is in charge of shifting the weight to the middle. I also believe if a dad/mom is going to instruct a hitter they need to read and educated themselves as much as possible. The one suggestion a might suggest is this:
Take some cuts with the idea of NEVER LETTING YOUR REAR HEEL LEAVE THE GROUND....and watch your suddenness and power increase. It will move despite your effort to not let it move....but that effort to not let it move is where the power comes from.
This might not make sense if you're not of the 'belief of the rear legged/one leg hitting 'theory'.

Correct the rear leg/hip is in charge and sets the front foot down. Yes it controls the weight shift. We see it the same way.

I believe you hit from the back leg and that trying to keep the back foot planted is a good thing. It's impossible, it will be pulled up, but trying to keep the back heel grounded is a good thing (you leverage off the back heel). I think if you think you hit off the front leg it will create to much weight shift forward for example. You more then likely will lunge or create some issues with getting to the front side and pull the swing through.

"Shift THEN Swing" versus "Shift AND Swing" .........

..... I personally advocate "Pivot THE Swing".

..... and IMO that isn't going to happen for this young lady until she learns/develops/embraces the 'lateral tilt'. Not until then will she "Pivot THE Swing".
