Hard to create change in direction with a firm grip... Hands need to be free to find a pivot point that allows one to stay inside the ball.

Not here.
Every coach talks about loose hands and it makes sense but is that true? Both ruth and Williams talked about a very firm grip.

I guess it would depend on what point in the swing we are talking about. Load/loading, slot/slotting, or contact. I would think a hitter would want a firmer grip going into contact.

I use my hands as my fixed 'pivot point'. Again, I believe we are back to, what point in the swing a hitter can have a loose grip or a firm grip. I'm more concerned with the wrist being loose and flexible. I thinking you meant to say WRIST and not hands need to be 'free'. Again, I can be wrong.

rdbass, the hands being free is more about not having a predetermined destination to whip from.. Loose wrists/hands allow for the flow and whip to happen.

Some questions to ponder in this regard:
Where are the muscles are that are used for gripping?
Do wrists (or any other joints) have muscles? What controls joint movement?
Can you find a way to have a strong grip and loose wrists?
Can you think of any athletic movement that starts with tensed muscles?
Why is there such a focus on pre-event stretching in sports?
How important do you think grip strength was in Todd Frazier's infamous no-hands home run?

Yes.....Golf and hitting a baseball/softball.:p

2 Different discussions going on in this thread. Lag & Corner.

It is fairly common for golfers to speak of a bent right hand ... which in baseball/softball is the equivalent of a bent top hand wrist.

It's the same basic concept.
