The question is about what is more effective: a home run hitter or a batter who sees the ball and hit it between the gaps? DD school ball team is filled with home run hitters...6 different girls had hit a home run this season. They are one of the top teams in the state. DD isn't one of these home run girls. Instead, she hit between the gaps, move runners and get on base. As a result, she is at the bottom of the batting order when she does get to bat. My question and the one I have debated with DH, Do we work on getting a more powerful swing? DH says her swing is fine and not everyone will be hitting home runs. My opinion is why settle when you can make improvement in DD swing.

DD led her team in batting average and on base.(parental bragging part)

Home runs are awesome but hitting the ball hard is what is important IMO.

Sometimes it does not show up in stats but just hit ball hard see what happens.

(Nice stats but 0 fielding does not look good.:))

You say that DD is batting low if at all. So if she's 3 for 6 w/ 2 walks after 10 games, that's not enough at bats to judge her.

To your question, if you get on base a lot and hit balls in the gap, that is plenty good enough, especially in HS.

We have to remember that school ball is for fun and to give girls who aren't as good playing time and confidence. My DD is leading the team in extra base hits, walks and has to be 1st or 2nd in average, yet she will get pulled when it's time to put in the subs. This makes no sense to someone who thinks the best players should play every inning and switch out the girls who aren't quite as good. Talented players are privileged with their superior ability and we must keep them down in hopes coach's DD and friends will raise their game. Just let it go, rec ball oops I mean school ball will be over in a few weeks and good competitive ball will start.

How many at bats has she had? A high batting average with only a few at bats can't really be looked at the same as a slightly lower batting average with many at bats.

I see no downfall in trying to improve her swing.

DD is asking, "What she needs to improve on in order to get more playing time." Honestly I don't know enough with batting to help her. She practice after practice and on the weekend. I hate to see her push so much without a focus on what she needs to do. On the bright side, her slapping looks better, her time run from home to 1st has gotten faster and her pitching speed is gotten faster. These are areas that I am comfortable enough helping her.
