Copied from another site....looking for opinions on this myself.

Do any of you think its a problem to pitch 15 feet or so away regularly? Do you think this will cause timing problems...im of the opinion that a moving ball and timing it is a good thing. I just try not overwelm with speed. Any thoughts on getting some speed on the hitter other than having a pitcher would be appreciated.

When we do close front toss, I'm not trying to blow it by her. Generally working on one thing or another. I think they need to see the ball to put a good swing on it. Not guess an swing down on it. Get the barrel turned and drive through it. I like working on speed at the correct distance. Even though it's fast, they still get to watch full distance.

The pitcher needs to be consistent, easy bad example is to quick pitch them.

I make sure they are ready and make a nice easy circle to throw the ball, they see it the entire way. No tricks.

Please make sure you have a VERY GOOD L-screen in front of you. My DD could kill me with a line drive from that distance.

Yes. 15' is pretty close. I pitch to DD from about 35' and I think that is close. I also work up to (my) full speed. Need to make sure that your DD is able to do her 'full load' and not an abbreviated load. I think it can mess up timing of a younger hitting 'working' on her newer mechanics. JMHO.

Rd....i agree. What i do that close is have her get pre loaded and try to feel that instant turn of the barrel. Dont want to rush through her load for sure

I have a screen...just looking for an idea of what u guys do outside of having a actual fast pitcher throw....a way to introduce high speed. We play a PGF schedule so we see speed every week.

Facing someone who can pitch effectively from full distance is best, but front toss from a shorter distance is a better option than hitting off a machine. I have a 30' batting cage in my back yard, which puts me about 20' away from my DD's contact point. It's scary as hell being that close, even behind a decent screen, but it's very effective for good hitting work.

Bold above....that's where the 'timing' problem comes into play...pre-load isn't part of the proper sequence.

Get to a pitching distance that your players don't have to pre-load. Getting to a Pre-loaded position isn't teaching them how to face 'speed'. Unless your hitters are going to bat in a pre-loaded position. Hitters need to be able to 'figure out' how to create 'time' in THEIR sequence. Ideally that's against the closes-es a coach can simulate game speed. I think older good hitters distance isn't as big a factor as it is for younger hitters. I also understand a coach has to work with what they can. So, it's just my opinion.

this is the distance i've always done front-toss--seated and from fairly close and with an easy toss. hitter can work sequence in a very relaxed fashion. I'll throw in/out/up/down from there and also work changeups...
