I haven't seen any concrete data that shows this makes them better.

It's not new. Pedroia's been doing it for years. Longoria does it. Etc.
If there was data supporting improvements with the hop, I would think every MLB team would utilize it...

I'm not saying it does or doesn't make them better. But I will say that change comes slowly sometimes, evidence or not.
