So I am new to video instruction as I hadn't coached softball in about 8 years and I wasn't really plugged in back then. Now that I started watching some videos, (I'm a natural cynic) I usually see something that I think is ridiculous and I move on to another video.

My question is, most of the videos posted on this Thread are teaching boy's how to swing for baseball. "IS THE BASEBALL SWING THE SAME AS THE SOFTBALL SWING?" I always thought there were a few differences and that is what I seem to find that most of you are taking about in some of these videos. Don't get me wrong, I see some very poor instructional videos, however some of them just look like the guy is teaching a typical baseball swing and not what I would teach my girls. If there are distinct differences in a baseball and a softball swing, could you share these with me?

The strong consensus on this board is that baseball hitters and softball hitters should be taught the same swing. The best swing for baseball is the best swing for softball, and vice-versa.

I just wasn't too sure, since the angle that the ball comes in is different. But to be sure, there are some out there who would teach differences in the swing?

There are certainly those that believe concessions need to be made in fastpitch because of the fact that the pitcher is closer than in baseball. They allege less reaction time. They encourage a simpler, quieter swing, less stride. They might frown on visible loading of the hands. Hands closer to the ear, then straight to the ball. Some might also teach a more linear approach, keep the shoulder closed longer, knob to the ball.

As far as the angle goes, I don't think the trajectory is as much different as people might think during that brief period the ball is traveling through the hitting zone. Maybe somebody who has studied or read about that can share. Even if a softball swing was very slightly more flat (and less upward), that would be a very minor adjustment that a hitter might make automatically. The basic swing mechanics and movement patterns are still going to be essentially the same.

Let's see....recipe for a knee injury and possibly dental work. And oh yea - not solving the front shoulder issue.
