So DD had her first camp where they measured bat speed. It was measured via a device tracking the bat.

I now have a Pocket Radar. The Pocket Radar folks say measure bat speed via the ball hit off the tee.

Question is this : what is the better figure "Bat Speed" or "Speed of the ball off the bat"?...

I think it's the latter given that bat speed is going to be different off end-loaded bats vs balanced bats.

Thoughts??

Take 5 swings for bat speed to get a average, now take 5 swings hitting a ball off a tee and get an average. Compare the 2 averages and it might show where a breakdown is happening.

Problem is that my new Pocket Radar appears to only read balls hit off the bat and not the bat itself....... (wish I would have realized this before I bought the Pocket Radar - even though I still would have bought it for DDs pitching)

Imo u want exit speed of ball. Say u have 2 girls same bat, both bat speed of 60. At point of impact, one girl bat speed goes down to 58 the other 55. The 58 girls ball would go faster and farther. I think ts called moi. Moment of inertia.

Use a swing speed radar for bat speed, juggs gun for BEV ....... BEV will be a few miles less than bat speed.

Thanks all for the feedback.

All along i was thinking that bat speed was/is a misleading stat. BEV or the speed of the ball off the bat is the factor i would want to be considering.

I wonder if those camp coaches know that too? (Given they were giving awards for pure bat speed - i should have given DD a wiffle bat for the win...... :) )

Not really, Bat speed is a big part of what creates the BEV. The better the one the better the other. D1 coaches measure both. And there are guidelines for conditioning testing on these.

Dont remember, it was years ago, Ray Demarini said he had the same bat speed of Larry Carter. At the time, LC was a softball monster, his brother Joe played for the Blue Jays during those ws years. Any way, same speed but why did LC always crush the ball than Ray? Larry had probably 30-40lbs on Ray, LC was way stonger than Ray, but they both swung the same bat speed. He can maintain his batspeed thru contact longer than Ray.
