I just wanted to share my daughters progress since starting some of the drills suggested by members here and how they have helped. Pretty proud of the work she has been putting into her batting.

Your welcome, I know she gets a little over her back foot in the gather, but should she be leaning back (Towards the Catcher) during the gather?

Excellent question and to be honest its probably best left to more of the experts of the board so my apologies I cannot answer that.

I will tell you though for my daughter (and I hope to get some video soon) her biggest issues is her hands (Im too focused on hand movement). So i basically have her swinging with her top half instead of her bottom half. Your original thread led me down a rabbit hole of information so THANK YOU ha. So I too am looking to run this drill with her ASAP. I had her doing some dry swings in the front yard yesterday and i was pleased.

That's what I like about this forum, it allows you too see issues that one girl is having and the solutions that are recommended and apply it to another that's dealing with something similar.

You mean this drill right?

Yes, she is leaning too much towards the catcher. It's part of her predominantly all-back/all-forward pattern. You've said before that this was how she has been instructed up until recently. Making a change away from that movement pattern is going to take some time. I would suggest keep working with the Justin Stone drill until things start to sort themselves out for her.

As you continue forward with your own education of hitting mechanics, be aware of the Hansen Principle..."Always compare anything anyone tells you to slow motion video of the best in the world."

In the bigger picture, I see a young player with some good natural athleticism. If I was picking players for an 8U team, I wouldn't hesitate to pick your DD. Keep up the work with her, and she will go a long way.

Also...Turn your camera sideways! :)

No comments other to say you must either have a cavernous backyard or very understanding neighbors to be able to hit softballs in your backyard

Thanks will do!

I was thinking its just going to take time. Its seems to me, when she does her "Gather" in her case leaning back she is also striding or reaching with her foot at the same time. From my understanding, watching videos etc. a "Gather" is just a gather before even striding. Is my understanding correct?

;) No cavernous backyard, neighbors are seniors. This is in the front yard, they neighbors actually encourage her when they see her outside practicing! There is a school around the corner we usually go to, but we did this with a batting net. So no broken window lol!

She's over-cooking it. She's trying to pull it all back so she can bring it all forward. The reach with her front leg at this point isn't really affecting the all-back/all-forward intent in her movement pattern. Pay attention to the relationship of the head to the rear hip during the stride phase. In a good swing, the head will not get behind the rear hip the way she is doing.

This is my DD (decent swings, but still some areas to work on)...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7eL2zUHpsg
She uses a tap-back as a timing mechanism. In this move she is gathering back into and around her rear hip and rear leg, before she strides forward to create stretch/tension to launch the swing. She isn't shifting her knee/torso/head outside of the rear foot. During the stride phase, her head and torso are moving forward until foot-down.
