As soon as my 8 YO DD started facing live pitching she went from a regular stride to a bit of a leg kick. Not
sure why she did it but she did and she has spent the whole summer trying to figure out the proper timing with it.
I have been pretty patient with it, and she has hit decent even with the struggles, although I would have rather she just stayed with her regular stride. Kids..

That's impressive for an 8yr old to be able to control that. What cue did/have you given her in regards to her stride? Just letting it happen naturally? I have one hitter that just left to college that has a JD leg kick. Her college coach told her to learn it. So we integrated stork drills into her lessons last few months before she goes off to college. In the beginning I had to remind her quite a bit to keep the weight back until she was ready to swing. Eventually she learned control . I personally don't like it. She hits ok with it. Neither better nor worse. She is a good athlete . Better than she realizes.

Julray,

To further simplify what W=W said, and this is IF she's doing things (or thinking about it) as two distinct actions - she needs to realize her stride is PART of her swing. (Hopefully, she's never tried to slog through the many "when does the swing start" threads that love to pop up here). She can't swing unless she strides - as you suspect, it needs to be ingrained, instinctual.

Perhaps a few minutes everyday of just "mental takes" - she gets in her stance with the "yes, yes, yes/no" mentality, starts her swing (yes, yes), then pictures a bad pitch (no!) - again, just something to help ingrain into the muscle memory the feeling of moving (striding) with EVERY pitch.

Where did I say she controlled it well? It is getting better little by little but not really due to anything I did. The only thing I have been telling her is to try and control her move out better. Some days are better than others but it is getting there.

Chehalis, Wa
Look at a Bonds clip. He strides to swing. He doesn't stride then swing .

This clip isn't a perfect match, but you can see how everything is the same regardless if you stride or don't.

The swing is the shift.....

Ya...tell that to my DD3...she just can't figure it out...

I'd like to know what the difference in power is, with the same batter, between a non-striding and a striding swing....

There has to be a PSI gauge you could set up to measure the 2 swings when the bat makes contact with the PSI gauge.

I will take a stab and say there's not much difference if both swings are in sequence. Personally I find it easier to feel the stretch and get good separation when striding. I find it hard to keep my hands back with no stride and find myself doing all back, all forward.

Not here.

Shouldn't be no difference in power between a striding and non-striding. Unless the strider is relaying on momentum for their power source.
Just see Cabrera striding and not striding.

With the same batter, I disagree....I'll say 10-20% more power with a Striding Swing....all depending on the batter's size, strength and weight...That's 10-20% more PSI, it takes alot of force to get a ball just another 20-50 feet...

Let the hammering and insults begin...:D

Somebody have, or know of, a machine/meter we could compare the 2 swings on?
