I made one. One axe handle, shortened it and used a roll and a half of cheap duct tape. I tried it out in my cage. Felt good to me, thinking about trying it with dd and checking mechanics on video. Would like to hear comments before I start an experiment on dd during season. I’m thinking 5 or so reps per session as part of our warmup segment before regular tee and front toss with normal bats.

FFS, as a drill that involves several reps or as a one time demonstration so the hitter can feel something in their swing? (Or neither, lol)

WW, I often throw the barrel as a demonstration when I come across a kid that is not releasing.

I’ll also use it as a drill on occasion. For example, when I have a kid that is “swinging around their body”, then I’ll have the kid literally throw the barrel. They are shocked at the result of their first few barrel throws … which often has the barrel flying towards the 3B dugout (RH-hitter). They do this, despite given the instruction to throw the barrel either opposite-field or up-the-middle. I tell them that while they are shocked by the result, that I was not shocked and knew it was going to happen … and that I merely wanted them to see their swing on display and help emphasize the point.

We have one of DD's old bats that we use for this drill. I definitely do not want her throwing one of her newer bats like this... This was a drill that we did often when DD was younger and still utilize it once in a while now (currently 18 yo). I was pleasantly surprised last fall when she was working as a volunteer assistant coach with the junior high team. The coach asked her to work on hitting with a few players and she had them working in the cage on this very drill. Proud dad moment :)

FYI... If you do the drill properly and provide a goal of throwing the bat directly over the pitcher's head, it can have a positive impact on the hitter's lower half as well.

I had a sawed off bat I used back in the day when I coached baseball. We did something similar to this but I had not thought about duct tape. I kind of laughed when I saw this. Does anyone remember way back in the day when you weighted stuff with screws, nails, ...? Duct tape make so much more sense. BTW, I still have a softball I weighted with screws that my dd used when she first started pitching. That's crazy!

I actually have a motley assortment of old bats that we do this with occasionally including wood bats. The thing I have noticed about throwing bats is the knob kind of becomes a hindrance. This axe handle is a Cadillac to my Chevy bats for throwing. College age dd picked it up and when I explained what it was for, she said “well, it definitely isn’t too light” so maybe start with one roll.

Cannonball, I’ll post a photo of this fine creation later when I get home!

Edited to add- maybe I will duct tape the knob area of my throwing bats so they come off the hand nicer.....

Power Stick | Baseball Athletic Training Gear

I have my DD throw a SKLZ power stick. 30" - 30 oz. with her hands on the barrel. The barrel is only slightly larger than the handle. She throws it for distance, direction and spin rate. I have her throw some left handed too. People (other coaches) give me looks like I am crazy. But she is the best hitter on the team.LOL I am going to try making a lighter version or just buy the BB Rebellion product.

What length is good for this? Do you approximate it so that the wad of tape is about where the sweet-spot on the bat would be?
(I can see in the photo that its longer than 17”):D

I wasn’t scientific at all about the length, I looked at the BB Rebellion video and used his hands on the grip to approximate the length. I think I decided his hands could cover the handle three times then the tape ball was about the same. I cut the section off that the axe head would slide over, probably didn’t have to do that.

Using the Skilz bat backwards as a flinger is a good idea. I like bat throwing but I’m nervous about throwing them in the cage. This is not so bad, the tape ball keeps it from going through the net and quiets it down... We usually do it in the yard.
