OK, two moms from my daughters school want their daughters to come try softball.(10 yr olds). They know I coach and know my DD is really good gold allstar nationals player, so they want me to help them get them ready to join fall rec ball. My DD has great eye hand coordination and has been playing since she was 5 years old. She has a very good swing. A little BR mix with Justin Stone. So what is the fastest and best way to build a swing for a 10 year old that has never held a bat before? Both girls are relatively athletic (dance and gym) thank God.Any beginners drills that will start them off on the right foot? I want to avoid casting right from the start because my experience is that once they cast (early extension) it is very difficult to change. I really don't like to teach extension especially the push the hands thru stuff.
I like this one, but perhaps too much for beginner?

I not sure what you are saying. I referred to cast in a negative way. Cast to me means the hands immediately are pushed away from the core and elbows are extended and then the batter frails at the ball with no power. Batters can sometime armbar their lead arm and turn their torso and create pretty good bat speed but have no chance against good pitching. Inside fastballs will eat them up.

The Stone video you posted is not a bad place to start. IMO, it's a good introduction to the proper sequence of movements needed to build a good-quality swing. Focus on sequence first. Eliminating common beginner movement patterns (i.e. all-back/all-forward) is a good thing. I have found that young/new players can be helped early in the learning process by resting the barrel on their shoulder (neck slot) and using the hands to turn the barrel to contact. Using the neck slot can also help in getting them to use their body to power the swing, rather than their arms, and can help avoid the pitfall of DBSF.

thank you Eric. Help me more understand, define or explain " using the hands to turn the barrel to contact" and DBSF? DNA-Binding Stimulatory Factor? LOL

Forearms might be a more accurate term than hands. Supination of the rear forearm turns the barrel off the shoulder. Rear arm maintains an upright-V at this point in the process,.

DBSF = Drop the Barrel and Swing Flat. This is a common issue with low-level youth players that involves a faulty leveling process where they drop their hands (and bat) to the height of the pitch and swing in a plane level with the ground. Often, it's a product of being told by coaches to "swing level", which is right there with "squish the bug".

Yes forearms, Even in Mankin's videos he uses the hands and it is very ugly (release the hinge angle). As the years went on and he could no longer say it was the hands, he started to say it was the forearms. In his video he used a golf club and tried to show THT (top hand torque). It was really ugly how much the hinge angle was affected. It would make any golf instructor sick to their stomach.
