I’m watching a dvr’d OK-Baylor game- syd Romero appears to incorporate the downward swing favored in slow pitch. Is that just me ? Even the slo mo at commercial breaks she looks like she makes contact on the downswing. She’s hitting well this season I’m wondering if she’d be hitting better if she was plane-matching

When I watched this a couple of months ago I muted it and only looked at the video :p. Also it is BP so take it for what its worth.

Personally I believe the notion of trying to get on plane early is flawed.

Yeager: The better the hitter, the later they wait to get on plane.

The hitter gets on plane early with the barrel arcing backwards.

My question of what is a short swing.

It is nothing like Yeager is showing,

My point was that she didn't get on plane at all. She chopped down on the ball, resulting in a pop fly that carried over the fence.
Later on, Nicole Pendley drove one well over the fence that was gone from the git-go.
While not a big kid, I think Syd falls into that category of player who is just so damn good, her actual mechanics often don't matter.

Romero is at the beginning of the attached video, Pendley starts at 0:44

She hit the ball so technically she was on plane at least for that one instance in time . Here is a still right before contact:

Her swing is certainly not perfect but she can hit. The game I went to this year she fouled off about 5 or 6 pitches on the outside corner with 2 strikes
before ripping a double in the LF/CF gap.. You can tell she was just trying to fight them off..kind of reminded
me of what Wade Boggs used to do.

P- good job capturing that frame. Are you in town to run today? Beautiful weather for it:p. I'm thinking "on plane" means bat and ball are in same plane in opposing directions. Her bat path was more like a slap (down) that missed.
Also- I am not trying to imply that she is anything less than great! She is one of those players that I love to see at bat because I know it's going to be interesting!
When I started this thread, I didn't know if this was how she always swings or if it was the exception. I'm thinking this is how she does it. I've seen some aspects of Lauren Chamberains swing that I would discourage, but it works for her!( good thing I wasn't her coach when she was little, might've ruined her career!):D

Nah, no marathon for me. If I tried to run a marathon...well it wouldn't end well!!

Right on plane means ball and bat are traveling tangential to the same 2D surface(plane). However at contact by definition bat is on plane since bat and ball occupy the same point in space. I guess the question is do you want to be "on plane" for as long as possible or not. According to Yeager's quote he says no. Maybe FFS can expand upon Yeager's reasoning. Others say yes as this allows one to not need to time a swing perfectly and still make good contact.

.She and her sister have amazing fundamentals. Really good technical models
She and her sister have different fundamentals. None the less hey are both excellent players. I believe they are both at a level beyond where fundamentals are required for success. I believe they can make a mistake and compensate for it in such a way that no one ever sees the "mistake". Really in the top 1% of the top 1%
