The 'release' is a big part of 'timing' ... and it also is a big part of realizing post-impact 'extension'.
I do half swings to work on extension. Start on tees and progress to front toss. Hitter swings through the ball at half speed and stops at full extension with the end cap of the bat pointed at the pitcher with head down. Teaches lots of good stuff. Staying on the ball longer, hitting the inside half of the ball, tracking ball all the way to contact. I have them check their lower half to make sure the front leg resisted (locked) and back foot rotated.
Hey, even the girls manage to get too extension after a swing and miss.......
Getting to extension has nothing to do with 'timing'.....
