Personally, this is why I only ever work on one thing with my DD. When it comes to game or field practice time, just hit the damn ball. Thinking about what you're doing comes with our 1 on 1 time.

Anyhow, my personal thought is lots of front toss with over/under training. That is if you want to build speed and power. Most of the time over the past several years, when we hit the cage DD had 3 bats with her for over/under. I don't think anything will ever change just plain hitting the ball. I'm personally not a huge believer in "drills". Work on what you want to work on while swinging off a tee or front toss.

Not sure if you ever considered using a sensor (like Zepp) during some of these drills. It can be as technical as you want or just provide some validation on a good or bad swing. It's amazing how much harder they start swinging when they can actually see numbers (bat speed at impact, hand speed, etc.) and try to increase them. They also provide good info on the quality of the contact (attack angle, bat angle at impact, etc.).

It's very beneficial for the girls to visualize a particular flaw that they may not be "feeling". I don't think you need to use the sensor all the time, but identify areas that you want to work on and measure your progress from time to time. Set your goals high and watch the progression.

"Over the years I’ve seen hitters with somewhat odd/interesting/non-optimal movement patterns, that years later had virtually the identical movement pattern."

Seen that too! Change is hard, so the earlier (younger) the better.

"Here's the thing...I don't subscribe to the "she will figure it out" approach until they already have a good foundation in place, and a decent understanding of the swing. Even then, I see young players drift into bad habits that can be easily avoided if someone is there to give guidance."

I could not agree more. Reps will not normally create a good swing. The more athletic she is the better the odds. I have found martial artist and gymnast are great students and have strong cores.

Side-track...

My DD does a weekly strength training session. One of the young athletes that is often working along side my DD is a 16yo jiu-jitsu competitor. Her core strength is amazing.
