What statistic would you use to determine the effectiveness of an at bat?
What in the QAB formula supports this assertion? Sure, the 6+ pitches (3+ after 2 strikes) may result in a K or weak pop-up or weak grounder to 2B...but all of those things happen to "good" hitters too. The other elements of the QAB - HHBs, XBHs, walks, sac bunts and sac flys - are all things that I would view as positives (or at worst, neutral) in most situations.
6 seems a little low for me, 8+ sounds better.

I have many times gone over season long stats and thought “Really? Those kids lead in QAB but don’t lead in any category that seems to matter???”

Not sure if you meant "at-bats". Generally speaking, one of the statistics I like to see in a hitter is that they have a high on-base-percentage.

It's a feel-good statistic that correlates to wins. I am referring to the the QAB differential between teams in a played game.
If you do more of "X" things during a game you have a better chance of winning than the other team.
The flip side is that you do not want to have at bats that are "Not Quality". That would be:
Not hitting the ball hard
Not getting Extra Base Hits
Seeing less than 6+ pitches an at bat
Less than 3 pitches after 2 strikes.
Not getting the Sac Bunt down
Not putting a Sac Fly in play
Not walking

I do find some value in QAB as a statistic. There are certain things that a hitter can do that, in my opinion, help the team without being a 'hit'. The struggle I have with QAB is that it seems like there are several different formulas floating around. A dad on our team keeps score for us using iScore. That app alone has three different formulas for QAB.

Some hitters have mechanics that have them flaring off foal balls again-and-again-and-again. The odds of them squaring the ball are low. The odds of striking out, or putting a weak ball-in-play, are high. From my way of thinking, making such a player 'feel-good' by rewarding her with a high QAB stat is the wrong way to go. Rather a dose of reality ... get her to buy into needing to improve ... and then teaching her to barrel up and square the ball. Work towards stats such as high OBP, SLG and BA.

Right ... pick the formula you want to make someone feel better about not having solid OBP/SLG/BA stats.
Everyone needs a participation trophy of some sort.
