you have only one way to bend. The spine. If you tilt your shoulders the spine bends. If you curve your torso the spine bends. Slow and sloppy.

If you tilt at the hip joint the spine remains stable. If you drive the scap down the spine remains stable.

EricF is spot on. The front shoulder action is in response to the core. Very important you don't try to start the barrel by directly using the shoulders .... something I see a lot of JV and young players do. They have a sense that the lead-shoulder pulls ... and they are actually somewhat correct ... just that they go after this directly rather than indirectly.

I don't disagree with any of this, and honestly don't remember suggesting to "start the barrel by directly using the shoulders". However, I do feel that the front scap is activated or engaged in some capacity. It is a feeling I have been focusing on lately. And if the front scap is not engaged, I have the feeling of the barrel getting away from me. As though I have less control over it.

It seems to me (as I move my own body) that it's a response to the action of the core. The way FFS describes it aligns with what I'm feeling.

I have no issue with it being a "response". In fact that is how I feel as well. But even as a response, movement still occurs.

Any guesses who wrote the following?

The bypass is exactly what David Wright says. He tries to swing without moving his shoulders. He tries to keep them in place. Of course they turn. But they do not turn on their own. They are turned. They are turned by the hips after the 'lateral tilt at go action' has removed slack and slop out of the torso to hip link. This lateral tilt, is a bend of the spine laterally, not rotation around it, in a direction (rearward) other than that of the hips (forward) and stretches the system even more. This lateral tilt is accompanied by a projection of the hips forward....and it provides a platform for the hands and triangle to turn the barrel.
