Hello all,
My daughter is 13. She is a pitcher in 14U and almost all of our focus has been on pitching. I feel like I am able to guide her with that pretty well based off of what I learn from her pitching coach. Her hitting needs help. I looked on the site here for something like a "top 5 things of hitting" post. I wasn't able to find it. Can someone point me in a direction to start with her? Also, I could post of video a her swing in a game for critique. Basically, I need help and I am open to any input. :)

Thank you!

Ok.. here is a video from a game. Obviously not her best hit but hey... that's why I am here, right? Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest you go to the technical hitting board and start learning from reading a lot of their posts. I'd also suggest you find a highly recommended hitting coach in your area.

She has a number of significant issues and really needs to start from scratch.

Two things she has to fix very quickly is that her she has very significant bat drag as she's racing her lead elbow through the swing and just dragging her bat through the zone. She also is rolling over her top hand very significantly as well.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but when you do find a good hitting instructor I wouldn't start by tweaking. I'd rebuild her entire swing from scratch as it has a lot of issues.

What I'm seeing is that she has her weight gathered back, waiting for the ball, and then pushes everything forward together to swing. An all-back/all-forward is not an effective movement pattern for hitting.

A good swing is not a push, it is a whipping action. We want to see separation and stretch/tension being created...https://noontimebaseball.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Posey_060813_side.gif
Pay attention to the movement of the front foot and the hands. They aren't coming forward at the same time. They move in opposite directions to create stretch.

Some people just getting started with understanding a better movement sequence for hitting have gotten useful information from this video...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLbpAoG_dgQ&index=17&list=PLLo_t691U8DVQCriImV9Kt44VdEI6iFir

You aren't being a jerk at all. Like I said, almost all focus has been on pitching. That is why I was wondering if there was a "Start Here" kind of post on this forum. I know the pitching forum has some great sticky threads to start from that have been extremely useful. Unfortunately I am in an area that doesn't have much opportunity to find hitting instructors.

I have to be honest. Even as a novice when it comes to batting, I thought I was spotting this one. The bat seems to be behind. Is there a good drill or solution to this problem that I can start her on?

Thanks.

Get her sequence sorted out first. This is the foundation for the entire swing, and a much more important issue to focus on at this point.

MountainMan,

If you take care of this first, and she does it correctly, you will be surprised how many other issues will go away. Then you will have a solid base to work from. If you are looking for a "start here", that would be my suggestion.
