Batting Stance?

So, watching a couple college softball games recently I noticed that several of the young ladies stand with their front foot, really behind them. They all tend to step towards the pitcher when in the load or swing, but just curious why start so far open? I've read in one place or another that a fix for stepping out on a swing is to start out with the foot back and they just have to step into the pitch because there's no place to step back anymore?

Thanks
Dave

This is the reason we introduced an open stance for DD 2 years ago, she was pulling off the ball at contact (e.g. stepping away from home plate). Not for everyone and might only be stylistic but it has helped DD stay on the ball, longer.

I can't remember which College team it was, but during a broadcast this year the announcers were talking about how the coaches had studied the open stance with the help of departments at the university. The one thing that stuck with me was this. As a right handed batter, your dominant eye is most likely your right eye. As you open the stance with the front foot the head and torso also open up giving the batter a better initial view with that dominant eye. This makes logical sense to me. Since my DD and I heard this she has decided she wants to go with an open stance. I was skeptical, but I like it now because she has a bigger load as she picks up her foot more now than she did previously. It did take her a while to get used to closing it up on every swing.

Isn't your head on a swivel (neck) that can easily be rotated so both eyes are looking at the pitcher? This is the same argument for batters laying their bat across home plate with two strikes and then pulling it back during the pitchers wind-up?

Any pics as an example? My 6 y/o is doing this in coach pitch (stepping out/in the bucket) and her head goes flying with it. Wondering if an open stance can fix it.

You can use whatever stance, cue or mechanism you think helps get you into the right position but the first "stance" that really matters is this one:
