I hear this phrase all the time but I think it should be changed to confidence is contagious. I've watched my daughter step into the box with confidence and without. I can tell which at bat will be successful. When a team starts to hit the confidence builds and the young women go for it. When they struggle you can see the confidence in their ability is low. The mental game has as much or more to do with hitting as any hitting fundamental.

confidence in hitting may be generated on a team when players all start hitting, but its easier to say "hitting is contagious". it removes the thinking and just becomes doing.

Saying "be confident" is like when I tell DD "Don't worry"(about whatever it is that she's worried about) and she tells me "Daaaad! You always say that but it never helps!!"

It is contagious. If mechanics are reasonably good, success at the plate usually hinges on confidence. The lead-off hitter getting on base provides a mental lift to everyone following.

I think it happens when pitcher gives up a hard hit. It carries over to the next batter. Batters are getting pumped, pitcher feels the pressure, and the sticks wake up.

Sucks when it happens to my dd and she gets rocked on, great when she rocks the pitcher though!! HAAA

It has nothing to do with confidence but rather visualizing a ball being hit into play by the batter before them. This is why if your team is hitting you want to be quick to the box and keep it rolling. Conversely opposing coaches have realized that mound visits can kill the momentum (which is very short from batter to batter time wise).

This isn't my opinion there have been research studies on it.
