Thank you all for the advice. There is a store locally that we can demo bats that I just found. Her mechanics are actually very good for her age and she has an excellent BA and OBP. I want to get her something that she can swing easily and control.

Your goal should be to refine her mechanics so that she can swing well a -10 or heavier bat (e.g., -9 or -8) bat as soon as possible. Mechanics, not age, height, or weight, should dictate bat size IMO.

I just noticed I didn't mention her age. She just turned 10. Even though she isn't that big I would be wanting her to use a heavier bat through refining her mechanics?

If you get the mechanics right, swinging a heavier bat isn't difficult. If you can swing a heavier bat and have good results against fast pitching, the underlying mechanics are probably pretty sound. An all too common problem today is that the big drop bats (-11 to -13) mask mechanical flaws and produce good outcomes. However, as the speed and skills of pitchers increase those flaws are exposed and those hitters will struggle and may not be able to modify their swing mechanics quickly enough to be able to keep playing/enjoying the game.

ETA - I see no downside to having many bats (never bought near MSRP) of different makes, models, lengths, and weights to experiment with. But like many here at DFP, I am an acknowledged equipment addict who has no interest in recovery.

The answer to your question, which I think is whether it would be better to refine mechanics and then go heavier or go heavier now and work on refining mechanics, is the same as the answer to the "which came first, the chicken or the egg" question - it depends on the kid and YMMV!

Not trying to hijack this thread but since it is on bat size. I have been tossing around the idea of putting a -9 in my DD hands over her -10 and was wondering if anyone has any experience in doing this? I do not think the extra weight would be a concern at all, just wondering if anyone has seen any improvement when they switched?
