When I see her swing like this I can't help but think that she would be a good golfer.

I went back to look at her swing this morning and the first thing that popped in my mind was golf. So, I hopped back on DFP to revisit this thread and there it was....^^^^

Here is an interesting comparison between the two instructional swings and the cage swing

The logic, as explained to me by Tripp, is the relationship of the barrel angle.. the example in the gray sweatshirt(bad one) would be a barrel dump(His words)...That type of swing leads to chipping balls... IE the relationship of the barrel and the wrists is compromised..
Just relaying the message so don't kill the messenger....

I am way over my head in understanding the softball swing, but I am a scratch golfer. Is this just a feeling she has to get the bat to work correctly? This video is of off setting forces may not help your softball swing but it will hell your golf swing. Lol! . This may or may not be useful..... I am way over my head . https://youtu.be/KceztwOBV8I . I used to drag the handle of the golf club and would hit it all over the place( I relate that to a push swing in softball) when I felt the clubhead get over my hands , it felt effortless , the momentum of the club was allowed to work. I realize that I may not be making sense or contributing to the discussion. .

Thanks for the posts and I have to confess (again) that hitting is not my thing. I dabble in the hitting threads on and off but keep my posts primarily on the pitching threads.

With that said, thanks for the reply TJ and team. I did google some "baseball and golf swing similarities" and was actually surprised and gave me some things to think about.

Coaches and instructors can argue this from an effectiveness but some of her claims cannot be defended from a physics standpoint. To say the downward path will impart enough backspin to make the ball go further is just simply factually wrong and I am surprised and disappointed that this is still being advocated by high level players and coaches.

The effect of backspin is covered in the physics of baseball. It's a little complicated. Some of best parts of that book make us realize that we intuitively know the answer. For example, we know a coach can fungo a ball out of a park, but a pitcher could be throwing 200mph and a bunt will not go out of the park. Therefore, we intuitively know that the idea that the pitcher supplies the power is wrong.

In this case I would propose something simple like Chamberlain and I can go have a contest for $100 on who can throw a tennis ball in the air and hit it further. I get to swing up and she has to swing down but impart some wicked backspin on her dropshot.

Or just look at any other sport with a ball -- tennis, golf, for instance -- where flat or upswing shots go farthest and shots with backspin are specifically hit that to be for a high, soft, short landing.
