I'm just curious if anyone knows what is considered a good batting average at the 18u level. Coach said he'll be posting them for the players. I think my DD wishes he wouldn't!

I really don't pay that much attention to BA, I like the On Base % much more. I don't care how they get on, baserunners give you a better chance to score :)

With that being said, in HS we had 1 player with a .036 BA.... Yea, at that point the BA is something to consider hahaha.

I think somewhere .350ish would be pretty darn good IMO

A good batting average depends on the level ball you are playing and who is keeping the book. If you are playing high level A-ball, and have an impartial scorekeeper, anything over .300 is pretty good. Partial score-keeping and .350 or better is good. B-ball, .400+ is very good.

Sidebar: My DD was playing middle school ball last year, and hit a routine pop fly to left field. The LF pulled a "Timmy Lupus" and took 3 steps in and the ball landed 1 step behind her. The lady keeping the book, turns to me and says, "nice hit".....to which I reply, "that was not a hit, it was an error on the LF", to which she responds, "the LF did not touch the ball, so it is a hit in the book"......just dayum!

Actually, your lady friend was right. Although it obviously should've been caught, its a hit under NFCA and NCAA scoring guidelines.

In our "coaches book" it is an error. While I have no problem "padding" my DD batting average on a play like that, the same rules have to apply when my DD is pitching, and if one of our outfielders pulls a "bone headed" play like that, I do not want my DD to be charged with giving up a hit and potentially an earned run!!!!

This is A level and our team's average was 300 after the first weekend. Coach is very happy...our HS team had a much higher average but I know that is a totally different animal.

I think BA are relative. all depends on the scorekeeper. that being said, i like to score in an age- appropriate manner. if a fielder makes an error that is not entirely unexpected at that age level, i would score it a hit rather than error knowing that at a higher level a fielder shouldve made the play.
DD was on a team once that had a "tough"scorer. He was always taking legitimate hits away from batters due to his perceived errors. In her case, she got up with two outs, hit a sizzler between F3 and F4 and then the RF bobbled it and she wound up on 2B. A rally followed, she scored the tieing run and the winning run came in shortly after. In an unusual move, the Manager wrote up a little article for the newspaper, going by what was scored in the book. When I asked him why he didn't mention the kid who started the rally, he checked the book and said "Mike scored it an E4 so she didn't get a hit". Ever since then I have been careful to score my teams according to level they are competing at and when I send team e-mails I never single out anyone for praise- because I will likely miss someone who either deserves it or needs it.

That's still a hit though unfortunately, and would be an earned run. On the contrary a scorching liner right at someone for an out is not. Hitting Stats don't become particularly meaningful until the sample size gets up there. And pitcher's ERA will always be at least a little bit influenced by how good the fielders are.
