go and wail on the basketball a few times yourself and you will have your answer. The shock to the wrists is substancial. After hearing DD complain I hit it a few times and we didn't hit it again. I wouldn't allow it if it was done in her team practice.

I actually have hit the basketballs and I have also hit tires. I never felt any ill effects. I do however believe that a kid that swings with all arms would feel an effect.

It seems like this drill (as with most things) comes down to personal preference. Obviously some coaches and do it and others do not. Thanks everyone for your input

A few years ago, i watched hs practice hitting basketballs. My daughter was on the team. Her wrists hurt. Her teamates wrists hurt.
And a few elbows.

But, i use a punching bag.
One, there is no recoil.
Two, i try to teach a loose(not tight) grip at impact. I can actually hit the bag with just a couple of fingers on the bat at contact, with the same force, as a tight grip.

I'm new, im learning, is this wrong??

Just judging from the reactions (or lack of) from the hitters in the video. It doesnt appear that they are experiencing any discomfort. Also , the are hitting the crap out of those balls.

There are many drills, tools, etc., that can be used to accomplish various objectives in sports. How the drills are used (correctly, incorrectly, over-used, etc.) will determine their effectiveness or harm. Just as in conditioning with weights, running, etc. Muscles will get sore, for example, when conditioning; part of the process. One must be able to distinguish the difference between benefit and injury as far as the pain aspect. Not all pain is a bad sign.

No, that's not wrong, and there is much to be learned doing it that way. Hitting the bag is not meant to be a follow-through drill, or a push drill; it's an impact drill, a collision drill, if you will.

I agree. Even the manufacturer of the TCB ball recommends a limited number of reps.

I know that most on here dont like the idea of hitting basketballs , etc. But , I found this video interesting. Seems like these girls are hitting them pretty hard. What would be the downside?

I dont see anything wrong with this drill. The basketballs look like mini balls, not too much weight.
I would not hit full size basketballs, but these look to be smaller than soccer balls
She is trying to make them hit it deep, outside pitch

I don't feel there is a downside, more just personal preference like you say. We don't use the basketballs in travel, but the HS coach uses them. I've not heard the girls complain of injuries, but I've also not seen production go up or down in the box. Like most things, if you feel it's helping ( regardless of what others say ) go for it.

The downside would be if the drill causes the hitter to degrade the unhinging action of their wrists … and that would include muscling through contact with the wrists. The wrists can unhinge faster if they are not muscled to do so.
