At a coaching school last year, Coach Candrea described a tracking drill where the batter catches balls at toe touch. Can someone here elaborate on that? I understand the concept but do not have the details on how the drill is executed. My notes only had that general description.

Thanks

Its a tracking drill, place a glove on the back hand, hold it up as if it were a bat, time the pitch from the machine to catch the ball at contact. It is created to get them to see the ball as deep as possible.

I love this drill to teach bunting. Hope you have a lefty on the team so everyone can borrow her glove. Put glove on back hand (right hand for right handed batters), square to bunt and catch the ball. If you can catch it, you can bunt it. Let the bat be an extension of your hand and just catch the ball with your bat. This also teaches them to be balanced and in a more athletic position (on the balls of their feet) when they square to bunt.

Thanks for the replies! The part I was wondering about was how to catch the ball with your normal glove hand. Now I get that we need to use an off-hand glove. makes more sense and seems like it would be a great drill for deep tracking.

You really don't need an off-hand glove because you can always toss wiffle balls and just have them touch it with their open palm. But, it's much better with a glove, much more realistic game-speed reps. Get them comfortable in the batter's box.
