Wellphyt ... good post.

Listen to Tewk’s description at about the 3:20 mark (video in the original post). He’s speaking of an improvement/alternative to the “L” that you are describing.

Also see the link in Austinwass’ post.

Having the throwing hand come approximately behind the head can seem a bit strange at first ... but if you look at enough throws you'll find it is pretty typical.

Let's take a look at a few throws ......

Just in case it isn't so obvious, let's slow the same throw down a bit more ....

Let's look at another ......

Again, let's look at the same throw and slow down .....

And let's again slow it down ....

Yet another high level thrower with a similar mechanic. That is, catchers throw this way also ... and catchers make A LOT of throws during the course of a game ... go figure that they know to throw this way.

One more .....

By now it's probably getting pretty obvious what to look for ... but let's slow it down anyway ....

Even a high end Olympic caliber player throws with a similar mechanic.

You won't see much of this being taught ... there is a lot of "not so good" information demonstrated on the Internet throughout Youtube and whatnot. Review the drills shown earlier in the thread ... they work.

LOVE this thread! I know what I am about to say will draw some criticism, and I am not sure what I actually believe but....

The videos above with out question show women at the highest levels throwing HARD. But have these ladies always (since they were kids) had fast arms and no coach ever showed them proper technique because relative to there peers they throw hard. Or is it this technique that allows them to throw hard?

Looking at the Model Fielders thread it looks like OFs get their hand behind their heads like you are describing. IFs keep their throwing hand in front of their body, even when they are not side arming it.

Thanks for the vids ffs. DD's biggest struggle is throwing. A couple months off and she is dropping her elbow again. I spent hours looking for vids Sunday night and couldn't find anything except MLB pitchers. She seems to really learn from watching slo mo vids.

Throwing last week a friend commented "She looks like she is throwing a change up. Looks like the ball should be rocketing and it just comes off like a firm toss. I can't figure what it is." I said "She drops her elbow below her shoulder and pushes the ball." "Oh yeah, I can see that now."

I really appreciate the contributions as well. I would like to incorporate more productive throwing drills into my practices this season, but aside from the few listed in the "Why Your Softball Players Have Elbow Pain: Wrist Flick Edition" article, I haven't come across many. Several time's I've come across comments in hitting threads that tell someone to go back and teach a kid to overhand throw properly to help with batting mechanics. I've taken that comment to heart, but I've yet to find a good system of drills to improve throwing technique. It doesn't seem productive to develop snap infield throws by just doing some long toss every practice.

In my searches today I did come across some info on Dr. Mike Marshall. I found his reverse pivot drills to be an interesting way of teaching kids to feel their Lats and torso stretch through the throwing sequence. I do have to admit that I found the end result of the MAXLINE system to be a bit strange mechanically.

Dr. Mike Marshall's Pitching Coach Services
1/2 reverse pivot
full reverse pivot
full pitching motion

I agree Wellphyt...her hand is under the elbow and "rolls" up - Internal to external rotation....most female throws go right up to external rotated position....second picture....as they were taught to do by jugheads all over the country....

Wellphyt, let me know at what point in Hodge's video that he warns about the throwing hand moving directionally towards the back of the head.

Do take note of the throwing angle here ....
