Personally it is my least favorite position on field in baseball, softball has taken it to a new level.

How they can occasionally stand 30 feet from batter is beyond me.

I am thinking to play 3rd in softball the most important trait is you are fearless, being able to catch to ball is secondary.

Random post, go 3rd basemens.

My DD plays 3rd in college. I agree that you have to be fearless - the speed that the ball comes at her sometimes lodges my heart in my throat. Add to that having to have a rocket arm to make that throw to first makes it a position that is not for the faint of heart!

My DD went with me to the WCWS last year when she was 8, she was all starry eyed as she watched the Baylor 3rd baseman crash hard on balls almost with reckless abandon. My DD went and talked with the 3bag in the dugout between innings. My DD's next game she was even with the pitcher. A year later I'm telling her to back up most of the game. But as she is now playing 10u TB that fearlessness has an a great glove has paid off. She did get tagged hard once but next play she was right back at it.
It's a fine line between terrified Dad and Proud Coach.

I still think of my DD as a short stop but she's been playing more third than SS the past year and a half or so. She is definitely not afraid of the ball. She plays the 2 positions where she's most likely to get creamed by a line drive. It's great for my blood pressure.

Since DD started TB in 12u, she has not specialized in a specific position. She is willing to go where ever needed and since she is athletic most coaches use that to their advantage. Last year she was SS/CF and to me, those were important positions. When she joined a new team this year, they needed her at 3rd. Thank god for face masks and heartguards, because her coach plays her up REAL close depending on the count. It can be nerve wracking! I miss seeing her at SS, but she has had some great plays at 3rd this yr.

It's so nerve wracking. We're first year 12U and playing a lot of 2nd year 12U teams. These huge girls come up to bat and my DD is not tiny, but she's not one of the really mature looking girls. She's tall but still looks like a kid. When I see a girl come up to bat who's bigger than I am, it can be pretty scary whether she's at pitcher or 3B.
