I am very familiar with Tony Medina drills and heard of Kobata but never seen.....what's the difference between the two if any as far as drills, philosophy, etc
I haven't seen a ton of the Kobata videos, but enough to get a feel for what he teaches. My DD attends Medina fielding clinics regularly as part of her team's program. IMO, Kobata does a more in-depth job with proper movements for the lower half of the body (foot placement, pivots, etc.). Medina's instruction is solid fundamental skills that every travel ball player should be competent with.
I just re-watched the Kobata fielding DVD. It is dated with low production values, but solid instruction. To the uninitiated coach it looks like basic drills. To the more trained eye there is a lot of nuance in what he teaches on footwork when fielding the ball and making plays at the bases. Very fundamentally sound and in my opinion better than the Candrea videos, BUT YOU HAVE TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION and watch the whole thing. Some very good content towards the end. At $75 for Kobata it is not very expensive and well worth it. Quickly reviewed a couple of Medina videos online - not his paid materials - and believe Kobata is definitely teaching a higher level skill set with an emphasis on playing fast that I didn't see in limited exposure to Medina.
