Default Twice while she was playing first

My daughter played/plays a lot of different positions. Plus she's a pitcher. As she gets older we've started asking her where she prefers. She prefers first base. Ok- you like what you like. Ok. This year we only did travel ball- 9 tournaments (no rec). She only played first base twice. Both times. BOTH times- There were dropped 3rd strikes and the catcher threw to first .. but.. right at the runner. Right at the runner. !! Both times to snag them my daughter would've had to make a move she doesn't yet know how to make. My husband (who never blames anything on my daughter ever :-) ) says absolutely nothing could've been done. If she had stepped the way she needed to step to snag them then she would've been in the base path of the runner and the runner would've been awarded the extra base. My daughter (right after the play) asked the coaches "what should I have done?" They are bad coaches in a lot of different ways. And they fight about everything. The one said, "not your fault " while the other coach threw a fit (his daughter plays first too) in front of my daughter and yelled, "that base is as much yours as hers " to which the other coach stormed away. Each time this happened they've stopped playing her there. We're on a different team this year. So hopefully those days are over. But it still haunts me. She still doesn't know what to do in that situation. It haunts me that she says first is one of her preferred positions too. Then someone should really coach this issue to her - for goodness sakes.. it's happened twice in one season. And she only played first TWICE this season. This can't be our luck. No one around her SEEMS to have an answer for her. So they just don't play her there. It's crazy to me. Ugh.

Would have to see the play, but it's her job to give a throwing lane to the C on a dropped 3rd so C doesn't have to throw over runner. If C is in foul she can set up on the safety base, if it's in front of the plate set up on the inside. Coaches need to teach it. It's not much different taking throws to all bases and they will learn as they get older.

She should let the catcher know where she is by yelling 'inside' or 'outside'.

Depends what happens to the ball if it trickles between the catchers legs and the catcher is behind the plate 1B should set up in foul territory and stretch out to the foul side and catcher should clear outside as much as possible, if the ball is just dropped and its right in front of the catcher or at her feet 1B should set up inside and stretch out inside and the catcher should clear inside. The catcher and 1B have to work as a team but the ball is the key since the catcher does not have time to do more than take one or two good shuffle or side steps she has to throw from wherever the ball is and since you don't want to be throwing across the baseline that means lining up as 1B on the same side as where the ball is, on the line or really close call stretch and clear inside...my two cents hope it helps

So helpful. I will tell her all. Thanks much. Now I have something to tell her instead of, "not your fault" or "that base is as much yours as hers." ha. Thank you so much. We'll practice that. Thanks.

You stated that she CAN set up on the safety base. I do not believe that is correct the safety base is for the batter only.

She may use the safety bag to field throws coming from foul territory.

This may depend on sanctioning body then. We have rarely played games that have safety bags but I have seen twice where the batter was called safe because the first baseman did not touch the actual base but did touch the safety base. I did not see anywhere in the rule book that stated if the ball is thrown from foul territory that the baseman can occupy the safety base but that may be the case. All I could actually find on the subject was that the safety bag is for the batter only and once/if the batter becomes a runner then the safety base no longer exists. This is just my experience with the matter.

Stress to her that it wasn't her fault. She just didn't know. I sill see fielders at 16U set up wrong on all kinds of plays so it takes some practice. If you practice on your own have her try throwing with a runner so she can see it from both points of view.
