Not everyone dives. I played OF most of my BB career and rarely if ever would dive and yes I know how to.
Sliding catches, running into walls, collisions with other OF (unintentional) I had no fear of any of those. Diving head first for a ball in the air, not really a comfortable thing for me so rarely did it.
I did not have the same aversion to head first slides or dives on base paths which I would use when I felt it was the right call.

Ok - this is just like my DD. She is fearless when it comes to everything listed above. Makes me feel better!

HOLY MOLY - guess who made a diving catch in the outfield today!!!! DD!!

She made 3 great catches in the OF in her 2nd game today. After the games we were getting in the car and all of a sudden a man came up to the car and opened DD's door. It was the FU. He said - "I couldn't let you leave without telling you - GREAT CATCHES today". She was all smiles the whole way home!

Just for a different perspective, I went to a college showcase the other day and spent the entire day there. One of my girls had a great day and one member here had a daughter who had a great day. Anyway, we had a girl dive in the OF for the other team and she missed. When she came in, one of the coaches told her that there is a difference between being aggressive and being crazy. IOWs the coaches were not impressed. Hard to believe but my dd was signed as an OF for college. In fact, she was a CF. Anyway, she rarely dove for a ball but you could hear her yelling when she was going to dive. In no uncertain terms, the other OFs knew to back her up.

^^^^ Today you could hear DD calling the ball from the next field over! I guess she was right in saying she knew when she could make it and when she couldn't!

Little off topic, not much.

Our CF dived for a ball the other game and missed it, probly gave a batter a double instead of single. I will take that.

Is it fair to say the ball needs to be in middle of field to dive for It?

CF can dive at anything, RF can only dive right, LF can only dive Left? As a general rule, I know it changes based on game situation.
