We have a third baseman that fields well, but when she stands to throw, she often sails it over firsts head. I think there's a few things she's doing that could contribute to this.

- Not finishing her throw....she releases the ball and her arm appears to kind of stay where it's at instead of "slapping her opposite leg" Think motion towards leg....not actually slapping leg.

- The other is I think she's standing too tall on release as well.

- Feet too close together, which I'm thinking could contribute to her standing too tall?

Anyways...this is my best guess and I'm looking for some drills to work on with her, and really all the girls. As they could all improve on footwork and throwing mechanics.

Thanks
Dave

Wasserman's High Level Throwing:

High Level Throwing -

It is not a quick fix - nothing is when the player has already set mechanics, but this is the gold standard of how to throw and how to throw hard and accurate. It is a full tear down and relearn.

Wasserman's HLT is great, but the issue might not be that (or not JUST that).

It sounds like there could be some footwork issues, some issues with getting into the proper throwing position from fielding a ground ball. And if you think she's standing too upright, she probably is.

I've found it can be tough to teach infielders, even ones with decent throwing mechanics, how to go from fielding a ball to throwing a ball in a quick, fluid motion.

Check out Candrea's videos on YouTube. There's at least one 3B-specific video out there.

Sounds like a footwork issue and not a throwing mechanics issue. A combination of Kobata and Wasserman will sort it out.

Just the way you describe it sounds like the problem. She should not be standing per se, should be more of a gather, shuffle, throw concept.
