Front of base or split the bag for tags?

Because throws have not always been consistent, I have always had infielders position themselves in front of the base facing the throw and then, in midthrow, quick feet work turn toward the runner and receive the throw in front of the base for a tag. I do this so they can adjust with the throw if necessary.

With 14U should I continue this and just get them faster on the tag or should they split the bag?

Are you talking about throw downs on a steal?

One of my biggest pet peeves is girls standing in front of the bag and then reaching out like a first baseman to catch the ball then trying to reach back and make a tag.

It is OK to be in front of the bag because you should not be on the first base side at all; but you have to train the girls to let the ball go to the bag then tag, never reach out for the ball unless you have to to make the catch.

Steals or any balls coming in and it's a tag play. I focus on the ball coming in and not reaching for it (still working on it for some that is coming from rec). I tell them to have the ball travel as long as it can.

On a throw to second teach then to split or straddle the bag, otherwise the runners will slide back side and hand tag the and your fielder won't be able to reach them.
