16 year olds. We have been able to correct 2 of the athletes throws and they are much better now but we still have 2 that have bad mechanics and are excellent at the plate. They have the push style of throwing if that helps any. Looks painful just watching it.

Excellent hitting results OR excellent hitting results and excellent swings? It is very unusual to have a well synchronized swing pattern and poor throwing mechanics. Try putting them on a baseball mound and have them copy a favorite MLB pitcher throwing from the full windup +/- a pause with front knee up before driving forward (or at least try to get them to feel like they're throwing down hill). Might even try it with a baseball. Have you tried Wasserman's water bottle drill yet?

Wow this is getting interesting. I am always willing to learn from any coach or anyone for that matter. Of the two athletes with bad throwing mechanics one has excellent hitting results with less then stellar hitting mechanics and the other has great hitting mechanics. I have done the water bottle drill but honestly have a tough time for the athletes buying into the drill. They think its strange.

I don't think flick drills hurt. They just don't help (aka waste of time).

The L drills, on the other hand, can lead to real problems, IMO.

Like any improper drill ... if you learn it and embed it into your mechanics, then it hurts.

What you are teaching with the wrist flick drill is to break/disrupt the kinetic link and flow of energy.

We have incorporated 4 of the 7 HLT drills and doing them every practice as part of warm-up:
1. Water bottle
2. Arm behind throws
3. Staggered stance arm behind
4. 1/2 kneeling turn & throw.

We are also including J-Band work.

It's a commitment as it certainly takes more than the 10-15 minutes of traditional throwing warm-up. Certainly uncomfortable for us as coaches as we're always itching to move on to other agenda items for the practice.

First year doing it of course, so I'm paying very close attention to progress and improvement across the board.

I think there was another thread similar to this but maybe I'll ask again here: any other experiences incorporating this team-wide for a season? Results?

We started using the arm behind throws at the beginning of this past season in HS ball. We had used the wrist flicks and L drill for years. There is much improvement overall.

We begin conditioning this week with skills development restricted by HS rules so I am going to do the water bottle drill and the arm behind drill as much as possible with tennis balls. We can use tennis balls but no softball related equipment such as gloves. That may be a good thing. I don't believe the hand paddles will be considered softball equipment either. This may be a blessing in disguise!
