There's a reason that I made sure to get to the mailbox first yesterday.

"Oh, these old things?"

That's hilarious, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only guy who does that........now when you start chasing down the UPS & USPS trucks in your neighborhood, come see me, we can go to counseling together!

as for breaking in catchers mitt, perfect timing for that. condition it, no need to go on about that, plenty of threads on which products people like. but since it is offseason, find some pitchers about their age that take weekly lessons, and see if she can catch for them at lessons. make certain you and they both realize that initially, may be tough to squeeze pitches, especially for slower pitchers (fast pitchers basically force the ball deeper into the mitt which kind of forces it to squeeze the ball). also will help them develop catching skills, just make certain not to develop bad habits (kneeling, sitting, trapping ball under mitt, etc.).

Is there really any "shaping" that needs to happen for catchers, or is it more just about conditioning it and then get to using it?

Not being familiar with Bradley mitts, what's the stiffness like? Is it Vinci Kip stiff or is it Mizuno Franchise / MVP Prime stiff? bmakj offers some great advice, I think just some hand shaping and just playing catch, whether it's you throwing to her....hard or her helping out some pitchers catching them at pitching lessons. Some Lexol or Surf City in the palm, the heel, and heel binding won't hurt either!

My wife deals with all things money related in the household (except for the creation of it) so creeping the mailbox wouldn't work...

not really certain if "shaping" is "required". for DD's new mitt last winter (CMW3000), I conditioned it, played catch with her, and beat on it with a rubber coated dumbbell. lather, rinse, repeat. It was a tank, she literally could not close it new, now it is just about perfect.
