My DD will be finishing up 10u and moving up to 12s in August. She's had her catchers gear/bag for nearly two years and its time to upgrade. She's more of an athletic thin build (5'0 85lbs estimate) and her primary position is SS. She currently has the Mizuno Samurai Catchers gear and Samurai catchers bag. So here's my two questions:

1. DD likes her Samurai gear, but tried our #3 catchers LS gear on and fell in love with how lightweight it was. So any recommendations on lightweight catchers gear and I'm open to mismatched sets as well.

2. We both hate her Samurai bag.... want something bigger. I was thinking the No Errors bag or the Bownet Commander? Reviews or any other recommendations?

Thanks for your help.

DD wears Diamond iX5 gear and puts it in a Tanel 360 rage bag. You may have never heard of either before, but trust me when I say they’re both really good.

Diamond gear is lightweight, especially the helmet. The shins have plenty of padding and hold up really well. The chest is like a hard memory foam and absorbs foul tips and blocked balls like a champ. The helmet is about the same width as a Allstar or Under Armor but not as deep front to back and quite a bit lighter than either. LS helmet just wobbles around on her head, but Diamond helmet fits perfectly.

The Tanel bag isn’t the biggest I’ve ever seen by a long shot. The LS team bag is, but the Tanel is the best layout in my opinion. Here’s a link to it so you can see for yourself. My description really wouldn’t do it justice. http://tanel360.com/tanel-360-r-a-g-e-baseball-softball-wheel-bag/

Thanks for your input TexAg! Definitely going to take a look at the iX5 gear.... I found out they have a rep in my area so maybe I can have her try the gear on first before buying. Thanks I remember seeing the Tanel bag like a year ago, but I wasn't in the market. I love the look i'll share it with her mom once I get home from work.

I'm in total agreement with TexAg and I'll highly recommend Diamond ix5 catchers gear. I love the fit of their gear and it has protected me so well when I've been behind the plate and I had foul balls come after me. My old UA gear didn't protect me as well as this has.

As far as bags go...I use the largest catcher's bag that Boombah offers. It has a lot of storage in it and can hold all of the stuff I need for a weekend at the park. Personally, I use my Boombah bag and I keep a secondary smaller backpack to keep a change of clothes and slides, some things I might need quick access to like my bags for sunflower seeds and beef jerky. I also keep a deactivated cell phone in my bag which really only has Spotify, iTunes, TuneIn Radio and Audible on it along with a pair of Bluetooth headphones.

DD tried on the Schutt gear a few weeks ago at the ball fields and she really like it. She just got gear for xmas so there was no way I was buying anything already but I think her next set will come from them.

Miz and LS gear are some of my least favorites for catchers gear. The Miz chest is too rigid, transferring too much energy into the body, and causing blocked balls to ricochet further away. The legs are okay. I have been very unimpressed with the quality of LS gear, and many have commented about an uncomfortable fit and poor protection. Some of my favorite was the Wilson ProMotion, but Wilson killed it off and replaced it with the Pro Stock gear, which was a step backwards. Currently, All-Star is at the top of my list.

As for bags, I have been pleasantly surprised by the Easton E700W. My DD has been using one (team issued gear) for the past year, playing 14U TB. It's still in great condition, as are the bags of the two other catchers on her team.

I think our next team I will have to get a Boombah one. I really wish teams would let the catchers get their own bags!

I have a full pro motion set at the house. The shin guards are slighly used but the helmet and chest protector are brand new. Shin guards are intermediates and the chest protector is a 16". The helmet fits sizes up to 7 1/2". All black. Looking to sell since my daughter no longer catches. looking for $200 + shipping.
