I’ve been following this site for a bit but this is my first post. Wanted to get some thoughts from others that have traveled down this road before. My first year 12u DD is looking for a move to 1st to go along with catching duties and we are not sure about making the move to a dedicated first base mitt or going with new fielders glove. I’m leaning towards the first base option seeing that she is also starting to pitch and I’d like to wait to see how that develops down the road as I’m sure that will play a factor in the choice of the fielders glove. So basically I’m looking for previous similar experiences and thoughts on options. As well as recommendations on the first base mitt. For glove options I’d prefer to not go into the custom $$$. For reference my DD is 5’6” and wears a women’s M glove.

Being your first post I thought I would let you know Drakemir is the unofficial glove provider here, only sells Vinci but a few different price points.

If I am reading your post right she is catching for sure, might play 1st, might pitch and might play OF? To me that says get a quality fielders glove.

As a coach I love a good 1st basemen, as a parent I would prefer DD not to play it unless she has too. When she does her fielder glove is fine but she does not play it very often.

She could use a 1st basemens mitt in OF and C too. Would not recommend it for the other positions though.

Appreciate the info Quincy. I probably should have clarified the positions. My DD wants to focus on 1st, it’s her favorite position followed closely by catching. Pitching is a longer term project, we’re thinking next spring. As for playing time we’re thinking it could be 50/50 or 60/40 in favor of 1st base. But I will definitely check in with Drakemir on the gloves.

My DD (13yo, playing 14U TB) is primarily a C, and 1B has been her secondary position for the last two years. I've offered to buy her a 1B mitt a few times, but she prefers to use her fielders glove. It seems to work just fine for her.

Having read this, seems she is very adamant about focusing on 1B. If you’re considering a dedicated 1B mitt, you’ve got the check out the Rawlings DCT pattern!

DD pitches and plays third and first. She has a vinci custom in a 12" pattern. Works great for pitching and third. I bought a Mizuno Franchise 12.5 first base mitt. Didn't cost much and is a good bit larger than the Vinci. She likes it and it has helped her at first. May be in her head, but we had fun breaking it in, and again, it didn't set us back much. So now we drag these two around as well as a Vinci JCV-PC catchers mitt. The catchers mitt gets used for all pitching practices and lessons and has been used by a lot of her catchers. It is a tank. If Vinci's 1b mitts are built like it, they will last forever!

My DD 17yr old , Plays C, 1B &3rd She has a Rawlings 34 Liberty catchers mitt also a 13 Rawlings Liberty 1b mitt and an old Rawlings Revo fielders glove . She lovers her catches mitt so much that she uses it for all positions ! She's even used the Catchers mitt in the OF at times .I guess if you get a glove that feels comfortable in your hand it can be used anywhere ,well maybe not middle infield :)

2nd, SS and 3rd the pocket is too deep with C or 1st basemens mitt. Everything being equal the infielder is going to start their throw to 1st quicker with a 'normal' glove.

OF or 1st a C mitt would be OK. Softball catcher mitts are nothing like baseball catcher mitts,
