DD2 (10 yo) goes to a pitching clinic once a week to get catching reps. ast two weeks she has been complaining of pain in her catching thumb, seems to be "catcher's thumb".

looking to get an inner glove for her to help with this hopefully. wanting to avoid new mitt at this time, want to see if she can get through last 10 u season with this one, it is 32.5 and her hands are small, I worry her hands cannot handle a bigger mitt at this time (but when she moves to 12 inch balls, will be necessary, she has real issues squeezing 12 inch balls in the clinic, sometimes she gets paired with pitchers who throw 12s).

Evoshield thumb guard. Go ahead and buy a Vinci JCV-22 or a All-Star CMW3000/4000 mitt now and start breaking it in.

she has an EVOshield, does not like it, might try again, it was molded 6 months ago, so hand might have changed.

thanks

If it continues to be an ongoing problem, I feel that the All-Star CMW3000 is too much mitt for a 10 year old right now. But that mitt will fix or greatly help with your problem. It is designed with a single break heel, so the thumb is very protected, it's actually pretty hard for a ball is get to your thumb with that mitt! Thumb stingers hurt, especially multiple hits close together!

I suggest you try again. Those things can be a pain to get right, but EvoShield (as I understand it) will provide a replacement if you mess up the process. Allowing the joint to heal is important, so is preventing further damage.

Happened to my DS at age 8 during his first kid pitch season. We tried the evoshield, and we didn't get it to fit right, or he just found it uncomfortable, and after a couple of games, he ditched it. I bought him the Akadema catcher's mitt. It was light enough for him, and not too expensive at this age. (He's not really committed to being a catcher.) The thumb is much better protected. It's gotten tweaked once in the last year while using that glove. So I'll give a thumbs up to upgrading the glove.

A fortus catchers mitt would work also. Plus, a bit more manageable for a 10yo.

My DD does not catch, but my son does. He uses both a Evo thumb guard and a palmgaurd glove. Looked at the Defender, but never tried it yet.

One cause of thumb injuries could be not using proper catching technique. Hopefully she is getting some instruction and not just being a ball return machine.
