Anyone know about the Mizuno MVP Prime glove?

DD is 9 and has been using the Mizuno Prospect glove. It's worked for her so far, but we typically buy a new glove in fall and by the summer all-star season it's floppy and we wonder how she fields anything with it.

So my husband and I were thinking that maybe it's time to get a slightly more durable glove. We'd like to spend right around $100 if possible, and in a perfect world DD would be able to use the glove for the rest of her time in 10U (she just started this fall). She plays spring, all-stars, and fall ball, so about 9 months out of the year.

The Mizuno MVP is in our price range, but has anyone used this glove? The online reviews I've read have been positive, but the Prospect also gets glowing reviews online and DD kills hers every year.

Any thoughts?

Back on the dirt...
I dont recall if the mizuno gloves DD used at that age were the MVP or the Prospect. But all three of them had issues with the palm pushing out as they older in their life span. Usually less than a year of heavy use. This year I bought A vinci fortus for about $100 and its been through a lot of use at 12U and Im certain it will make it to next summer. To me, it was a better glove and was easy to break in. Prob not a forever glove but for the money, its the direction id look at. There are 2 others on our team that also bought them and they have done well with them too.

This is the one DD has. The 12" looks small to me but she likes the size.

Good luck in your decision!

This is the only type of glove DD has used (MVP & MVP Prime) since she was 9 or 10 YO (15 YO now). For the price ($60-$80) it's great for 1 to 2 years and then get another one. I'm all about spending money on good softball equipment but if the glove fits her well and she can field/catch with it well, no need to spend $200+ on a glove. My DD also pitches and beats the hell out of it (slaps her leg) and it will hold it's shape if you take care of it annd put a ball in it when not in use. Save your money for lessons and a good composite bat :)

DD used an MVP Prime First Base mitt. The thing was sharp looking for sure. She got a good year out of it and plays a bunch of ball. Not bad at all given the price range.

The current line of Miz MVP gloves are pretty darn good for the money. They have some high-end features (like lined finger stalls), and the leather quality is decent. The MVPs are definitely a step up from the Prospect line. It will break in quickly, and should easily last a full year, or longer. From what I have seen the brown and black versions tend to have better leather than the colored ones.

Another option to consider is the Vinci Fortus series. DFP'er drakemir can help you, if it's something you're interested in learning more about.

If your DD was a little older, I would suggest stepping up to a higher-quality glove. Spend $150-ish, and you are in the range of gloves that will last multiple years. A little more than that, and you start talking about "forever" gloves. However, being that she's just 9, something like a Miz MVP or Vinci Fortus is a good call (IMO).

In my experience, every glove out there will get too soft and floppy if you leave it in the car all the time. Leaving it in the car to get it warm is an essential part of the break in process, but leaving it in the car after that just reduces the useful life of the glove. That may not be what's happening here, but thought I'd mention it.

DD has the MVP, after having 2 of the more fabric Mizuno gloves which fell apart very quickly. She loves the MVP and it's holding up well. She's been using it just over a year now. Eventually we'll get her that glove she can use forever but I figured we'd wait another couple of years til she's closer to being the size she's going to end up before we spend that kind of money.

DD just made the jump from the Prospect to the MVP. She's only had it for a few weeks so I can't speak to the durability, but the MVP is definitely a higher-quality leather and a sturdier glove than the Prospect. It requires a bit more break-in time (the Prospect was soft right off the shelf), but it forms a nice pocket that holds its shape and still has the little notch to facilitate closing the glove easier. Of course, in her first game with the MVP a ball was hit to her in CF which she caught and promptly dropped (!), so you may want to give your DD some time to get used to it before using it in a game...

Thanks everyone! I think I'm going with the MVP. The Prospect is brand new (she killed the last one just before her first fall game and I knew I could get it game-ready in 24-48 hours) so if Santa brings DD a new MVP I should be able to have it ready by spring.
