Just behind home plate
I'm thinking it might be time to replace my catchers gear. I started playing the position in the beginning of spring 2016 and have used my gear hard. My padding in my helmet has a few small tears in the bottom of the foam on the sides. My chest protector has a couple of small rips on the inside and some wear on the straps. My leggings has some significant crushing on the inside padding especially where my knee goes. Plus when I wear them, there is a gap between the top of my shoe and where my toe protector connects to the leg guard. Would it be time to replace my gear? If so, what brands should I be looking at to buy and what brands should I avoid?

Yes it's time to get new gear. The shin guards usually get replaced every year or maybe a tad bit longer due to the patellar padding wearing out. Your helmet is only good for 2 years at most before you should either buy a new one or at the very least, send it out to the NOCSAE and have it recertified and rehabbed. The chest protector I change out with the helmet. So about every 2 years. I would look at Diamond, All-Star and Schutt as far as manufacturers go. I'm not currently happy with Wilson and I've had longevity issues in the past with Easton.
