Hey Everyone,

I’m a software developer and am looking to start my next side project. I wanted it to be softball related so I can work on it with my DD to start teaching her some programming. Since I’m kind of new to the softball world, I figured I’d reach out to see Is there something about travel or rec softball that you think a better website or app could solve?

I’m not looking to create the next TeamSnap or GameChanger (or softball discussion forum), maybe something a little more niche. But, it can be for individuals (players, coaches, admins), teams, or leagues. So, anything glaring come to mind that might be a good candidate?

Thanks!

How about an app for pitch charting? DD1 teammate in 14U dad would chart her every pitch using colored pencils. I know game changer has pitching stats but not which pitch is thrown.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it looks like there are a few of those out there, already. Here are a couple in case you'd like to use them:

So, here's one of my planned projects that will never get done...feel free to it: Develop a windows based application to score a game from video (after the game). Allow controls to easily advance/backup to known points for faster and easier scoring. Then synchronize and overlay the scoring detail at the point in time on the video. So, as you flip through the virtual "score book" after you have scored the game, it would take you to the video in the point in time of the play you wish. Graphically capture ball points and path. This could be used to generate pitch locations as well as a graphical spray chart overlaid on an actual snapshot of the field. Then click on one of the ball paths on the spray chart to play the video for that play. Click on the ball point in the strike zone to see the video of that pitch. Obviously, searching for players would be available. IE: Show me all of the at bats of player XYZ.

I would like this done before the end of the season, please. :)

I was thinking I'd be doing a PHP framework project, but it looks like you're forcing me to go back and get reacquainted with .NET! Hopefully my old laptop can handle it (though if the VS download/install is any indication, I'm in some trouble)!

Obviously, this biggest ask is going to be the graphical overlay. Not sure you'd be able to get hit spray chart AND strike zone from the same (I'm assuming) behind the plate video (from a GoPro mounted high up on a LynkSpyder, of course).

End of sesaon... no! End of year... probably not. Let's circle back in about a year and see where we're at!

If you want my opinion, MS can go choke on their 12GB community download. For small to medium sized projects, I would recommend using Studio 2012 Express:

Still very good stuff and isn't so demanding on your machine.

I agree with Corley.
Here's is one we just talked about. We need an app for our league ball that patrons can order from the concession stand while sitting in the bleachers then have it delivered.
