At practice tonight my DD's coaches noticed that she was having a difficult time closing her glove properly. She isn't able to to bring her thumb to her pinkie so she is knocking a lot of balls away that she should be catching. Essentially, her A800 closes like this.

Instead of like this.

The glove lays naturally in the "wrong" position and she can't physically force it closed correctly when she has it on her hand. She is 12 and does have smallish hands. Does anyone have a recommendation for a better glove choice for this situation? We need to track something down quickly.

Not sure if this will fix your problem as your DD's glove may be too far gone and just needs to be replaced, but I would suggest buying some Obenauf's Heavy Duty Leather Preservative and treating the entire glove, then put a softball in the pocket (I like to put the ball in a zip lock bag first so it does not absorb the preservative) and then put a Glove Locker around the entire glove. It is also beneficial to keep a ball in the pocket and the glove locker on the glove whenever your DD is not using it.

When breaking-in a glove, playing attention to the location of the hinge is an important part of the process, as well as whether you're trying to create a single-hinge or dual-hinge break. Generally speaking, smaller hands do better with a single-hinge break. Looking at the pics, I would bet good money that this glove has spent a lot of time stuffed into a gear bag without a ball in the pocket.

You MIGHT be able to re-work this glove into hinging differently (step 1 - fold it to its new hinge location, and pound the crap out of it), but it may end up far too floppy at the end of the process to remain useful.

The A800 is essentially a disposable glove. You can spend some time on it and hopefully do at least a little bit of repair but the real solution here is to get her a new glove. If the repairs attempted on her old glove prove satisfactory, then she'll have a backup she's familiar with if she ever has to use it.

Right now she is using a 12" glove. What do you guys think about going to an 11" or an 11.5" glove?

Measurement will differ between brands, and even between models within brands. But, 11 1/2" is small in any brand.

If she is currently using a 12" glove why would you want to go smaller? I would only suggest a glove smaller than 12" for a MIF with small hands.
