My 9y old daughter is switching from righty to left slap hitter and complained that her thumb hurt after her lesson. She wears regular batting gloves. She has skinny/boney fingers.

Should I get her a padded batting glove to use through this learning process? If so, any suggestions as to a good batting glove? Or another thought, is it too soon to even have her switching to left slap?

Thanks in advance.

Curious, why do people on these forums use "DD"????

Yes, I'm a newbie!

My DD also uses the Xprotect gloves and loves them. There are several different models with padding on different parts of the hand.

Also, if she is a RH thrower (esp pitcher) learning to slap, invest in an elbow guard.

The xprotect gloves are nice. However, the pain your daughter is having sounds like it is not from being hit by a ball, but rather from stressing her thumb due to overuse. Most likely, her grip is incorrect. She probably has a very deep "box" type grip which is causing strain on her thumb. This was a common problem for us in the 80's and 90's when we were taught all kinds of nonsense with how to hold a bat and how to hit.

Try adjusting her grip so that she's holding the bat with her fingers rather then her hand gripping with her middle two fingers rather then all her fingers. A product called the bat jack can help if she can't figure it out on her own.

Changed my daughters grip a little. The grip was too deep. Made sure knuckles were where they should be and having her attack the ball instead of the ball attacking the bat. Her thumb doesn't hurt any more but she said she thought she still needed new batting gloves! (Dollar Destroyer!) Of course.....

Thanks for all your replies and help!
