There are only 8 schools in the PAC10 that play softball, so I doubt you're ever going to find more then 8 of them on a top 20 list ;)

Of course, there is no Pac 10 any more. It's now the Pac 12. Colorado and Utah have joined. Certainly not in the elite of D1, but top half. As for Pac teams in top 20, Oregon State (77) has been there most of the past seven or eight years, but not the last couple. Certainly, SEC, Big 10 and Big 12 have done a lot of catching up recently.

I mentioned the NPF. $8000-$50,000 isn't a job, it's a hobby.

But the season is only June-August. One could be an educator and supplement their income with a fun past time.

A quick look shows the WNBA pays under $50k for most players.

One thing that seems fairly unique to fastpitch is Pitchers. Even if you are a top 10 freshmen there are some schools you just do not want to go to because you will not be able to pitch, seems circular. Assume the same is true for QBs and maybe goalies.

No one has mentioned that maybe, even if a girl is top 20 school material, she wants to stay closer to home because of family. How many of us parents who read these posts everyday have been to virtually every game and even practice that our daughter has had? My daughter has limited her search to schools in our and adjoining states- even looking at the conferences and where her conference games would be. Why? Because softball is really a family activity for us and it is important for her that family be able to see some/most of her games. We live comfortably but certainly don't have the $$ to jump on a plane every weekend to watch her play if she went to a school far from home. DD is also pretty much a homebody- if she were a 1000 miles away she would probably not be as happy. Just my 2 cents....

Pitching is a unique skill totally unrelated to the sport of softball, aside from the fact that it is required for the sport of softball. My advice to all pitchers is to know how to play the game, and know how to play other positions. Pitchers need to be self-driven and posses superhero work ethic to be successful at even young ages. These traits are worth buckets of gold, and make it easier for these kids to be good at other things, including actually playing softball ;)
