I don't know the particulars of how A level teams are determined. How many are there in the U.S.?

I'm not sure anyone can answer that...? I live in GA where there are 9 million softball teams. We're registered A (required by our org) but we're not really an A team. We have several A level players but are always having to add new players and catch them up. So far we haven't been able to get more than half our team to A level, which means not really an A team. I think there are a lot of those types of teams around here. If the top halves would combine to form As and the bottom halves would combine to form Bs, we could have some really good softball.

In Oklahoma, most of the younger age tournaments (8U-12U) are USSSA affiliated. In my DD's age group (10U), there are 4 teams in the state
who registered with USSSA as A level teams. 2 of those teams are legit A teams and can probably compete with most 10U teams in the country. They will probably end up playing in PGF at the end of the year.
At the end of the Fall my DD's team, B level, could play with any team in the state with the exception of those teams ( I think they beat my DD's team 9-2 and 8-1 when they played).

So Cal
In So Cal, which is largely dominated by the structure of USA Softball, if you are a travel team (not part of a rec league), you are an "A" team. "B" and "C" are designations for rec leagues determined by the size of the league and the history of their level of competition in all-stars. Subsequently, the quality range of "A" teams is gigantic.

We are in south Louisiana Our C class team plays mostly open tournaments There is only 1 A class team within 2 hours of my house I think they classify them selves A for publicity because they are not any better than we are. When we go to larger tournament C class we hang in for a little while but never make it to the end. So I feel we are not under classified. Point I’m making we don’t have as many teams In south Louisiana.

Around here (Michigan), you can pretty much classify yourself however you want. Our org is strictly A, but have been in other orgs that had both A and B level teams. The downside is there are B teams which should really be playing A, but play down and trophy chase in the B level tournaments.

If you want to have a better idea of who the A teams are go to www.usclubrankings.com

I should have added. If your team is not anywhere on this list, your team is not an "A" team. You may think you can whip up on all the local so called "A" teams, but you need to play in the big tournaments to even be considered a real "A" Team. Same goes for Gold. If your team has not qualified for any Gold level tournaments, your team does not deserve that Gold status. So many of these "hittin' kitten" teams call themselves Gold and I just shake my head. Gold status was really reserved for the top tier 18U teams in an organization years ago and that was the team you strived to make.
