How does your org handle jersey numbers?

Our org is growing and we are redoing our uniforms. Now the issue has come up with jersey numbers: they want to try to avoid overlapping jersey numbers between teams or if players move up to a team or whatever. Some girls have been playing for the org many seasons. Others play summer only, some leave then come back, and some are gap players where their birth year makes them move up and down every other year.

If there are two #3s but those players have no chance of ever being on the same team because they are 2 years apart, does your org allow them to both be #3?

This whole new trying to figure out jersey numbers seems petty. There is a woman who is adamant that only her daughter should be allowed a certain jersey number and the other 8 teams ranging from 8-14u shouldn’t be allowed to use that number.

I'd keep an eye on said mom, you're going to have more issues with her.

If you buy the uniforms you pick whatever number you want. If that number is taken then you pick a different number
If the team owns the jerseys, you get the number the coach hands you

I have no idea how they figure it out but DD was been #78 for 10 years. I do not think she picked the number just happened to be what it is.

She owns the jersey and did not need to buy a new one until she grew out of it which saved us a few dollars.

She guest played for a team that she happened to have a pullover for and duck taped #78 on the back. :)

What I noticed is that a program will have different teams with the same number. If a girl from, lets just say a 14u team moves up and guest play for a 16u team. That girl has the same number as another girl on the 16u team, they would wear a different color jersey. So for lineup, it would say for example: black 3 and white 3.

Our organization doesn't allow a player to have a number if that number is already in use by a player in an adjacent age group. So for example, a player joins at 12U and wants #24. If no returning player on 14U or 10U has that number she can have it.

Last year, my girls played for a different organization and numbers were only specific by team. So, my youngest DD was #44 on a 12U team and a second 12U team also had a #44. There didn't seem to be any issues with this approach, at least for the year we were with them.

The idea that only one player in an organization can have a particular number is absurd to me.

This is for a travel organization. I really don’t know how they can control this because players come and go all the time. They are assuming the same players will be in this league long term and that’s just not the case. They need to address it season by season. Returning players/ long term players keep their jersey numbers. New players to the team pick a new one. Seems pretty simple to me. In this case, a newly formed 14u team has returning players who moved up from 12u. Next year several girls on current 12u team will move up to this team so they are telling the 14us to pick new numbers so the 12uz get to keep their numbers. Coincidentally the woman whose obsessed with her kids jersey number happens to be on the 12u team.

So in this case, the older returning players who moved up to 14u are required to pick numbers that don’t conflict with younger girls who *might* play on their team the following year. It’s so nuts....I can’t even believe they are attempting to try something so absurd. All this is going to do is cause bitterness. This season has nothing to do with future seasons or future jersey numbers.
