How does your org handle jersey numbers?

Our org is growing and we are redoing our uniforms. Now the issue has come up with jersey numbers: they want to try to avoid overlapping jersey numbers between teams or if players move up to a team or whatever. Some girls have been playing for the org many seasons. Others play summer only, some leave then come back, and some are gap players where their birth year makes them move up and down every other year.

If there are two #3s but those players have no chance of ever being on the same team because they are 2 years apart, does your org allow them to both be #3?

This whole new trying to figure out jersey numbers seems petty. There is a woman who is adamant that only her daughter should be allowed a certain jersey number and the other 8 teams ranging from 8-14u shouldn’t be allowed to use that number.

Our org lets each team decide

Want a number? it goes to player on team who's been there longer...come at the same time...coin flip.

I have one gall who's#77. Who takes that number...nobody! so she's virtually guaranteed to have that number no issues. :)

Our organization gives returning players their number first. Then it goes by whoever is the oldest gets first dibs. Our organization does not care if players on other teams have the same number.

I think I would probably not be thrilled with such a micro-managing organization. We've been a part of a few, and one was awful, but even that one didn't try to control our jersey numbers.

As for the players, we've never had stress over that. My DD has been 7 since she was 7 (that's how she picked it, lol). On one team we were on, there was a 7 already, so she was 77. We've brought on many players to our team that wanted 7 but it was already taken. They've taken 77, or 17. Or picked a totally new number. I've never talked to a person IRL, player or parent, who got that upset about a number. Does seem like a red flag.

My 16U summer rec team got brand new numbers last year. Also happened that I had ALL brand new players last year, so 13 girls decided on 13 numbers. LUCKILY, all 13 got different numbers, but IF two players wanted the same number - I use the tryouts for that. My 2 ACs score the girls during tryouts, whoever had the higher score got that number, the other went to her #2 choice (provided it was available). Gives them an incentive to try harder in tryouts and takes ME out of the picture if I'm doing the hitting/pitching vs. the judging, especially if we don't know the girls personally. This year, with returners and such - returners keep their numbers (since they bought the jerseys), new players pick from whatever's available, and the process repeats year to year.

Hard to believe but off topic post, school ball.

They owned the uniforms so they gave them out every year. Returning players could keep thier number or jump back in the pool. Team captains got next choice.

What I found humorous about the whole thing was the lower number uniforms were the smallest and size went up by uniform number.

DD was a captain so she was fairly high on the choice list, she asked for the smallest number still available. :)

She, and 2 other players, had to go out and buy their own black pants. None of the school pants were close to fitting them.

Ha - DD had to take a number on her school team because it was the only uniform small enough too! Her pants were still gigantic - she looked like she was going out to play retro golf in her knickers.

One time we had a new player who wanted DD's number (DD was a returning player) - she offered to footrace DD for the number. Ok - no problem.
DD is the fastest kid on the team. She left the other kiddo in the dust!

We are not a very large organization but we have 33 numbers for each birth year in a 3 year cycle and then rotate. They keep their same number throughout.

For example:
2003's - 1-33
2004's -34-66
2005's - 67-99 with no 69 :)
2006's - 1-33
2007's - 34-66
.....

My DD is 7. I've told her there will be years she won't get 7 because it's popular and someone will already have it. She understands and it's no big deal.

If a parent came to me saying no one on my team can have a number because her daughter on a different team has it, I would have a very hard time not laughing out loud.
