We are renovating our HS Softball field and someone pulled out some catalogue cuts for a backstop that seems like it might be a little small. I looked in NFHS and while they had a field layout dimensioned, i did not see where the backstop was actually sized.
Do you size it in plan geometrically by laying out lines 25’ off the plate and make the two sides the same dimension as the back?

Also how high should it be?16’ to the “visor” and that projects forward and up from there?

Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks!

Backstop design should be customized to the individual field. A local high school built one and went with 4 high poles with netting and 3ft high padding/chain link at the base. The netting is raised and lowered by pulleys and ropes. If fans are going to be looking through the backstop at the game netting is so much better than coated chain link fence. This is how all college fields are built now. The netting is raised and lowered by pulleys and ropes. In this case there was no need for a visor because foul balls were not an issue. Not having a visor allows more foul pops to be in play. From the backstop to the dugouts and down the field there is chain link.
