On a personal level I really like this change. Hopefully the earlier communication can help parents with camp selection over the summer and get their DD's on campus at schools that are showing interest.
I think giving kids the summer before their junior year time to engage with coaches during the summer travel season makes sense.
The Sept 01 date really compresses the recruiting timetable and places a LOT of pressure on Fall of junior year, and then summer after junior year.
Why would the ncaa allow different recruiting rules for different sports, doesn't that go against their whole equality speak? Make one set of recruiting rules for every sport and be done with it.

Maybe because not every sport is equal? Maybe because girls grow more quickly than boys, thus making their projectability in a sport at an earlier age more likely, thus making them more ripe for early picking?
