Pretty much every time my DD watches baseball with me, she comments about how easy baseball infielders have it with so much time to make a play. Softball action is faster.

Baseball is not easier to play.

Its a different game, each game has its own style of play and way to play it. I enjoy watching both games a lot.

I get it. I enjoy both, too. This is the observation of my DD, and it amuses me. She is correct that there is more time to make routine plays due to the longer base distance. However, having a lot more ground to cover presents a different challenge.

12 year old girl who doesn't want to watch sports on TV. Can't be that shocking. She loves playing softball but doesn't care to watch it.
I'm certainly not going to turn the TV on to watch girls sports.
I knew USC didn't play softball, they didn't really play any girls sports other than basketball when I was at USC, in the last 12 years or so they started girls water polo, beach volleyball, girls lacrosse and soccer but I never watched any of the games

If you won't watch college softball, how do you know your dd has what it takes to play D1?

Obviously I have a bit of experience to speak here. :D After getting a good taste of both, I can say that defense is a much larger part of softball... except the outfield. OF'ers have to have great speed and arm strength in BB compared to SB, A LOT more distance to cover. However, BB requires far greater strength at bat. You don't get to use smoking hot trampoline bats (not talking about youth ball) and you MUST hit the ball hard enough to find a hole. Small ball only works for so long. While reaction time is big in SB due to the ball being so much closer, I still consider BB harder. The ball has a much greater distance to move. So movement pitches move a lot more. It's also smaller, and the bats are massively heavier. So, when people ask about the comparisons (and they often do) I simply say softball is a defensive game and baseball is an offensive game.

And since she is in 7th grade that top three will change 50x's anyway. DD's dream school was Auburn. Grew up an Auburn fan and loves going down for softball or football games. She loves the town. The summer after 7th grade she did a prospect camp there. She loved the coaches (gone now) and the players. The catch came when she got a campus tour and she was overwhelmed. She wants to go to a smaller school. So the list changed. The new list changed as she decided on her major. Then it changed again and again and again.

So here we are going through her sophomore year with a solid top 3 and about 5 that more that she could probably play for that have her major. Two of her top three seem to be showing interest which is harder to tell under the new rules but it seems to be there. Of course that top three will probably change a couple of more times before the end of the year.

All fair points. I never said baseball was easier. There's no argument here.

I played SS almost my whole career except one year in college. My DD now plays mainly SS for her 10U team. There have been times when she fields a routine ball and I see her rushing to get rid of it and a part of my old SS DNA is screaming you don't have to rush...when in reality she needed to get rid of it as fast she did. Her old man would have still been reading the label on the ball while the runner was crossing the base. On the other hand there are also times when I know she has been jammed pretty bad by the pitch but the result is still a pretty solid line drive where if I had made the same sort of contact in my college wood bat summer league I would have been looking for a new bat. Lots of similarities but lots of differences too...love watching both (ok I don't like watching slappers and fake bunt and hit but I put up with it ;) )

You want to make my daughter's head spin at ss, have a slapper up with a fast runner on 2nd. Having to stay in position, then beat the runner to 3rd on a steal attempt to take a throw as the slapper squares and then pulls back would drive me crazy.

I really enjoy watching MLB and softball but college baseball does not interest me at all from a viewing perspective. I don't know if it is the bats or just the game seems slow while MLB and softball are much more viewer friendly to me.

I agree...not a fan of college baseball...something about metal bats in baseball...yuk.

Using them is fun, watching...not so much

I'll watch pretty much any type of baseball but yes, I agree, the metal bats at the college (and even HS) levels are a bit of turnoff. I might have been
strange, but I actually liked using wood more than metal when I was college age. Something about the feeling (or lack thereof) and sound of hitting it on the sweet spot
with a wood bat was intoxicating :D
