I'm certainly not going to turn the TV on to watch girls sports.

This is disturbing and a poor example for your DD. If she doesn't watch College Softball on TV, how does she even know she wants to play in college? If you don't watch it, certainly your DD won't. College softball fills up my DVR in the spring.

I don’t know... I think maybe we have been a little harsh on o.p.

Isn’t the obligatory conventional wisdom line in every recruiting story “academics come first”, lol!

Both of my daughters love to play but never really had/have time to watch. I think their interest level in watching is pretty low. Their interest level in playing is beyond high. Here is my analogy: I used to spend a lot of time waterfowl hunting and archery deer hunting. It was the only thing I wanted to do from October to December. I spent all year waiting for fall, planning and working on my equipment. I could not be less interested in watching hunting shows, then or now. Boring. Why watch someone else do what you love to do, wasting time that could be spent grinding. Preparing. Researching. Scouting. Both of my hunting buddies loved those shows. I didn’t.

I tried to watch most of two D1 colleges games last spring. Let’s just say I was familiar with players on both teams. That made it interesting. I enjoyed it but it time wise was hard to get them all in. My wife is a baseball fan. When she watches, I would rather be doing pretty much anything other than watching. I’d rather do laundry. It’s not interesting in any way.

As far as not knowing a college in your state doesn’t have softball, it seems pretty forgivable. It surprises me that any college in Cali doesn’t have softball. In fact, it astonishes me. I live in a midwestern state. Not many schools here do not have sb.

Last... when that time comes that you think you want to play softball at a certain school, (and you confirm the school has a team, lol) DO watch as many of their games as you can. It will be time well spent. I am shocked at how little people know about the college teams they think their kid might be interested in. And kids that commit to a team not having ANY IDEA what goes on there. (I guarantee most spend more time researching travel teams than college teams before committing.) But don’t just watch the games! Get on the team website. How big is the roster? How many seniors are left? How many players on the roster can play the positions my kid can play? Look at player stats. Look at who HAS stats. Read the bios of players. Compare the stats to the bios. (They are ALL really good players.). Read the coaching bios. How big is last year’s recruiting class? How big is this year’s recruiting class? You can learn a lot about coaching philosophy and what you can expect as a player on that team. And when you start watching, there may be things that really surprise you about college softball.

That's too bad. WCWS games are some of the best action in sports, regardless of gender. That said, I guess we know where she's getting her opinion of college softball.

And just FYI, USC does field a club level softball team that competes in the the National Club Softball Association. The NCSA conducts annual regional playoffs and a world series championship tournament. So, depending on how serious she is about playing in college vs. how serious she is about attending USC, this might be an option. USC Trojans Club Softball on the NCSA website

I've seen the Cal State Fullerton club team play against the San Diego State club team. I'd say the level of play would be similar to 16u/18u travel ball.

FWIW, when USC added a few women's sports recently, the thinking was along lines of that they wanted to add sports that they could immediately contend for playoffs and championships. They recognized that, although they are in a hotbed for softball, it would be very difficult to be successful in the immediate future since everything is locked down years in advance by UCLA and CS Fullerton in the immediate area. I think they chose beach volleyball and women's lacrosse, both of which have been rather successful.

This is the conundrum that USC finds itself in as it's been explained to me: there's limited funding and thus, limited scholarships. They face this problem in baseball as well. Say a kid gets offered 50% scholarship from both UCLA and USC, and qualifies for no other financial aid. Tuition at UCLA is ~$35k (California residents). USC tuition is ~$55k. After the 50% scholarship, the kid can either pay UCLA $17.5k or USC $27.5k to play softball/baseball. Kids that historically would have gone to USC are instead going to UCLA (and other public schools) where it won't cost as much. Sadly, it doesn't look like USC will field a varsity softball program anytime soon.

Signed,

---Another USC alum that wishes USC had a varsity-level softball program

You should try it. Their belief system starts out young. You’re showing her that girls sports and thus girls aren’t as important as boys.

I got DD into sports for the opposite reason. I wanted her to know she IS just as good, or better than most boys and can do or be whatever she wants.

That's funny because I certainly would much rather watch the WCWS than any baseball game

Pretty much every time my DD watches baseball with me, she comments about how easy baseball infielders have it with so much time to make a play. Softball action is faster.

She won't be going to a JC.
She won't watch college softball, her travel teams have gone to Mary Nutter the last couple seasons but she isn't ever interested in watching the college games.

She hears all the time that kids who leave California to play for other states schools are traitors, granted it's always about football and baseball players but it's what she has heard her whole life around the house.
Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, Loyola Marymount.... maybe Fullerton or Fresno State will likely become her leading teams now. I just thought it was funny that they asked her to name her top 3 and none of them have softball.

Who knows, she's in 7th grade, maybe they will start a program

Being an alum of Fresno State, I follow them and try to watch them whenever they come out to Mary Nutter or travel down to SoCal to play. They've become a pretty solid team that past few years, but with Tricia Ford leaving, they'll have to rebuild with their new coach, but they'll come back around again. Fresno State is on my DD's list as well...
