My DGD is on a 3YOA-4YOA soccer team. This was DD#2's idea, not mine. I'm just a designated clapper..."Yeah, go team!"

As you might imagine, the kids are a hoot. God bless anyone trying to coach ten 3 and 4YOA kids.

Last Saturday, it was really hot. My DGD went for about 5 minutes, and then sat under our umbrella. One of the kids refused to play.

Turns out, the kid who refused to play was the coach's DD. After the game, the coach quit because his DD wasn't playing enough.

Good job, Coach Quitter. You're teaching your kid how to be just like you.

I gotta share this: this is the exact opposite end of the spectrum.

In the state we live in, you can’t have any contact with your travel team during the hs season. DD was an eighth grader on a team of mostly freshmen. The assistant coach’s dd was a freshman. They did what we do here- combined teams and begged for and borrowed players who wanted to practice and play from February until June when our hs players would rejoin the team. So the assistant coach missed his freshman daughters hs games whenever we had a weeknight practice or if we were in a weekend tournament. He also missed his younger daughters 10u games. He never once complained. He was always his normal merry, cheerful self.

So then in the beginning of June, the hs season ended and his dd rejoined the team. It was fun. She is a very good player and a blast for dd to play with. In the first weekend tournament, she tore her ACL and was out for the summer. It was terrible. Yet the assistant coach continued to coach, never missed a weekend or a practice. NO ONE would have blamed him if he wanted to go to his younger dd’s games but he wouldn’t have it. He said, “I made a commitment to the team and I will honor it, no matter what”. He basically spent a whole tb season traveling on his own dime, not getting paid, coaching other people’s kids and missing his own kids activities. Never complaining.

I have made friends with many good people through softball and some I hope to keep as lifelong friends. He is definitely one of them. Incredible person. And a great example to every player and parent involved.
